Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Stand

The sight of the corrupt police captain holding a gun to Leo's head made my blood run completely cold.

The six-year-old boy was sobbing uncontrollably, his tiny hands desperately clutching the captain's thick arm.

The other four children were screaming in sheer terror behind the heavy iron bars of the concrete cell.

"Drop the shotgun right now, Carter, or the kid's brains decorate this ugly basement," the captain snarled violently.

I slowly lowered the weapon to the floor, raising my empty hands to show I was no longer a threat.

Evelyn stood frozen beside me, completely terrified by the escalating violence in the subterranean vault.

The captain laughed wickedly and bragged about the massive offshore payout Arthur had promised him for cleaning up this mess.

He explained that Arthur was going to harvest the kids and then sink their bodies in the ocean to erase all evidence.

"You really think a billionaire cares about a dirty cop once the job is done?" I asked with a calm, steady voice.

The captain frowned, his arrogant confidence faltering for just a fraction of a second at my logical question.

I knew I needed a distraction, so I subtly pressed the emergency broadcast button on the stolen police radio clipped to my vest.

The radio was tuned directly to the unencrypted federal frequency used by the local FBI field office.

I began speaking loudly, ensuring the radio picked up every single word of the captain's corrupt confession.

"Captain Harris of the central precinct is currently holding a six-year-old hostage for a billionaire's illegal organ harvesting ring," I announced clearly.

The captain's eyes widened in absolute panic as he heard my words echoing faintly from his own police radio on his belt.

He realized that his entire corrupt confession had just been broadcast to every federal agent in the city.

In his moment of sheer panic, he lowered the gun away from Leo's head to reach for his radio.

I did not hesitate to close the distance between us with a massive, desperate leap.

I tackled the heavy captain violently to the concrete floor, knocking the breath completely out of his lungs.

The gun skittered across the floor, sliding far out of reach into the dark corner of the basement.

I pinned his arms down and delivered a brutal punch to his jaw, knocking him completely unconscious.

Evelyn rushed forward and pulled the crying children out of the cell, wrapping them securely in her long coat.

Before we could celebrate our victory, the elevator doors chimed again, and Arthur stepped out holding a small black detonator.

He smiled like a true psychopath and revealed that he had wired the entire underground facility with highly explosive charges.

He pressed his thumb aggressively against the red button on the dead man's switch.
