Chapter 5 - The Ashes of Hope

I fell to my knees on the hot asphalt as I watched everything I owned burn to the ground.
The blazing inferno swallowed the roof, sending massive plumes of thick black smoke into the night sky.
Firefighters were already on the scene, but the heavy hoses were useless against the intense chemical accelerants used to start the fire.
I had spent my entire life savings building a safe, warm home for those five children.
Arthur Sterling had sent his thugs to burn it down, effectively rendering me homeless and unfit for adoption.
I had absolutely no money, no home, no evidence, and the entire police force was actively hunting me.
I sat on the curb across the street, coughing on the toxic smoke and feeling completely broken.
I buried my face in my soot-stained hands, weeping silently for the siblings I had failed to protect.
A sleek, heavily armored black SUV silently pulled up to the curb right beside me.
The tinted passenger window slowly rolled down, revealing a woman in her late forties wearing a sharp designer trench coat.
She looked at my burning house with a deep expression of sorrow and intense calculating focus.
"Arthur has always been incredibly thorough when he destroys his enemies," she said with a smooth, cultured voice.
I wiped my tears and asked her who she was and how she knew about the billionaire's violent tactics.
The woman unlatched the heavy passenger door and pushed it open for me.
"My name is Evelyn Sterling, and I am Arthur's ex-wife," she stated calmly.
She explained that Arthur had stolen her family's pharmaceutical company during their bitter divorce a decade ago.
Evelyn had spent the last ten years silently gathering resources to completely destroy his empire.
She told me that Arthur had already moved the children from his estate to a highly secure, private surgical facility downtown.
The bone marrow extraction procedure was scheduled to begin at midnight, which gave us less than three hours to act.
"I have the security codes, the blueprints, and a heavily armed vehicle," Evelyn offered with a cold smile.
I did not hesitate for a single second as I climbed into the passenger seat of the armored SUV.
We sped away from the burning wreckage of my past, heading directly into a suicidal rescue mission.
Evelyn handed me a loaded tactical shotgun from a hidden compartment under the floorboards.
"You need to know that Arthur never leaves loose ends, which means those children are not coming out of surgery alive," she warned.

As I racked a shell into the chamber of the shotgun, Evelyn’s cell phone rang with a terrifying alert.
The surgical facility had just bumped the procedure up by two hours, meaning the first child was already on the operating table.
