Chapter 8 - The Undercover

Carmine screamed in absolute agony and dropped the heavy shotgun.

He clutched his shattered right shoulder as blood poured violently through his fingers.

Sarah stood at the bottom of the concrete stairs, holding a smoking, federal-issue sidearm.

Her terrified, sobbing demeanor had vanished entirely.

She held the weapon with the steady, practiced grip of a trained law enforcement officer.

"FBI, get on the ground right now!" Sarah shouted with stunning authority.

Mave stared at her best friend in total, paralyzing shock.

"Sarah?" Mave whispered, unable to comprehend the scene unfolding before her.

"My name is Agent Carter," Sarah replied without taking her eyes off the bleeding mobster.

"I have been deep undercover for a year, Mave."

Sarah kicked Carmine's dropped shotgun across the floor and kicked his knees out from under him.

She forcefully slammed heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

Leo remained on his knees, watching the federal agent with a dark, calculating expression.

"You used her," Leo stated coldly, glaring at the agent.

"You befriended my housekeeper just to get inside my estate."

"It worked, didn't it?" Sarah countered sharply.

She reached into Carmine's pocket and retrieved the stolen brass key.

"This key opens a vault that will dismantle the entire Russian syndicate and your empire too, Castiglion."

Sarah backed away toward the stairs, keeping her weapon trained directly on Leo.

"Federal agents are currently breaching your front gates, Leo."

Sarah looked at Mave with a brief flash of genuine pity.

"You need to step away from him, Mave, before you go to prison as an accomplice."

Mave looked at the man who had just risked his entire life to save her from the Russians.

Leo did not ask her to stay.

He simply closed his eyes and waited for her to walk away.

Mave grabbed Leo's hand and pulled him forcefully to his feet.

"Where is the escape tunnel?" Mave demanded.
