Chapter 4 - The Rescue

Mave let the sleek black phone slip from her fingers.

It hit the cheap linoleum floor with a dull thud.

The Russian enforcer grabbed her roughly by the shoulder and spun her around.

He was massive, with faded prison tattoos crawling up his thick neck.

"Where is the ledger your mother took?" the man growled, shaking her violently.

"I don't know what you are talking about!" Mave screamed, fighting to pull away.

The man raised his massive fist to strike her across the face.

The apartment door was suddenly kicked entirely off its rusty hinges.

The heavy wood slammed against the drywall with a deafening crash.

Leo Castiglion stood in the doorway holding a suppressed pistol.

He did not look like a businessman anymore.

He looked like absolute, unhinged murder.

The Russian dropped Mave and reached for his own weapon.

Leo fired two silent, precise shots before the man could even clear his holster.

The Russian collapsed backward onto the ruined couch and did not move again.

Mave scrambled away from the body, her entire body shaking with pure adrenaline.

Leo holstered his weapon and crossed the room in three long strides.

He grabbed her by the arms and hauled her forcefully to her feet.

"Are you out of your goddamn mind?" Leo roared, his gray eyes blazing with fury.

"You tracked the phone," Mave realized, her voice trembling.

"Of course I tracked it!" Leo yelled, pulling her toward the exit.

"You walked straight into a hit squad meant for my family."

"They aren't looking for you, Leo," Mave cried out, digging her heels into the floor.

Leo stopped and looked down at her in confusion.

"They were asking me for a ledger that belonged to my mother."

Leo's expression instantly shifted from rage to absolute horror.
