Chapter 6 - A Desperate Deal

"Don't you dare touch her," I hissed, stepping between Silas and the sofa.

Silas sighed, feigning disappointment.

"You really should have just stayed hidden, Clara," he said, stepping fully into the room.

"It took me four years to realize James actually managed to plant a seed before I cut his brakes."

Hearing him confess to killing James shattered the last piece of my heart.

"Why?" I asked, stalling for time.

"Because James was soft," Silas spat, his pleasant demeanor vanishing.

"He wanted to take the four billion and turn this family legitimate."

Silas took another step closer, the gun unwavering.

"The Morettis offered me a fifty-percent cut if I helped them swallow the Cole empire."

My mind raced.

If Adrian was really dead, nobody was coming to save us.

I had to save my daughter myself.

"Take me," I blurted out.

Silas paused, raising an eyebrow.

"Tell the Morettis I am the heir," I lied smoothly.

"I can sign the documents, I can transfer the trust."

Silas laughed, a harsh, grating sound.

"You think I'm stupid, Clara?" he mocked.

"The DNA test the doctor ran today proves the kid is the bloodline, not you."

He reached out and grabbed my hair, yanking me forward.

I screamed in pain.

"Pick up the kid," he ordered.

I refused to move.

Silas struck me across the face with the heavy barrel of his gun.

The world spun, and I tasted copper as I fell to the concrete floor.

Nora woke up and began to cry, seeing me bleeding.

"Mommy!" she shrieked.

Silas walked over to the sofa and grabbed Nora by her small arm.

He yanked her into the air.

I scrambled forward, grabbing his leg.

"Let her go!" I screamed.

Silas kicked me in the ribs, sending me gasping onto my back.

"You're coming with me to the roof," Silas snarled, holding my screaming child.

"The Moretti helicopter is waiting."

As he dragged Nora toward the door, I saw a shadow move in the dark hallway outside the bunker.

May you like

A laser sight cut through the darkness and landed squarely on Silas’s chest.

"Put my niece down, Silas," Adrian’s voice boomed from the shadows.
