Chapter 5 - The Setup

The silence in the bunker was suffocating.
Adrian stared at me, his chest heaving with conflicting emotions.
"Silas took a bullet for me ten years ago," Adrian said, his voice dangerously low.
"He is family."
"He murdered your brother," I fired back, finding a sudden surge of courage.
"Look at the ring on the screen, Adrian!"
Adrian looked at the monitor again.
The silver ring shaped like a wolf’s head was unmistakable.
Silas wore it every single day.
Adrian ran a hand over his face, the betrayal slowly sinking into his bones.
"If Silas killed James, and Silas knows about Nora..." Adrian muttered.
"Then Silas is the one who let the Morettis into the estate tonight," I finished for him.
Adrian’s eyes hardened into black obsidian.
"Stay here," he ordered, checking the magazine of his handgun.
"Do not open this door for anyone except me."
Before I could argue, Adrian slipped out of the vault, locking the heavy door behind him.
I sat in the cold, humming room, watching the security cameras.
I saw Adrian moving through the dark hallways like a ghost.
Then, a sudden burst of static filled the monitors.
One by one, the camera feeds went black.
Panic gripped my throat.
Someone was cutting the power to the security system.
I rushed to the console, trying to type commands, but I didn't know the passwords.
Suddenly, the heavy electronic lock on the bunker door beeped.
Green light flashed.
The door hissed open.
I backed away, grabbing a heavy metal flashlight from the desk.
A man stepped into the room, holding a suppressed pistol.
It wasn't Adrian.
Silas smiled at me, the silver wolf ring glinting in the dim emergency lighting.
"Hello, Clara," Silas said pleasantly.
"Adrian sent me to get you and the girl."
I gripped the flashlight tighter.
"Where is Adrian?" I demanded.
Silas chuckled, raising his gun and pointing it directly at sleeping Nora.

"Adrian is currently bleeding out on the living room floor," Silas lied with a cruel grin.
"Now, wake up the billionaire."
