Chapter 7 - The Best Friend

Sarah wore a sleek black tactical suit, looking absolutely nothing like the woman I drank wine with every Tuesday.

Mr. Cross instantly raised his weapon, but four laser sights pinned exactly on his forehead.

"Drop the gun, Dominic," Sarah ordered with a voice as cold as ice.

Mr. Cross slowly placed his pistol on the glass coffee table and raised his hands.

I stared at my best friend in absolute, paralyzing horror.

"You are working with Karin?" I gasped, feeling my world collapse again.

Sarah laughed, a cruel, mocking sound that made my skin crawl.

"Karin works for me, Giana."

"I hired her to distract Tyler so he would make a fatal mistake."

Sarah walked closer, her gun pointed directly at my stomach.

"Hand over the financial documents you took from the vault."

"You were like my sister," I whispered, hot tears burning my eyes.

"We grew up together and shared everything."

"We did," Sarah agreed softly, without an ounce of remorse.

"But your father left fifty million dollars to a spoiled housewife instead of investing it in my firm like he promised."

"I want what rightfully belongs to me."

Mr. Cross caught my eye from across the room.

He subtly tapped his heavy boot against a specific floor tile near the sofa.

It was a hidden mechanical pressure plate.

I took a deep breath and threw the thick stack of documents directly into the air.

The papers scattered everywhere like a snowstorm.

Sarah and her men instinctively looked up at the distraction.

Mr. Cross stomped hard on the floor tile with his heel.

The lights in the penthouse instantly cut out, plunging the entire room into pitch blackness.

A deafening security alarm siren began to wail from the ceiling.

Mr. Cross grabbed my waist and dragged me violently backward.

A hidden trapdoor in the floor opened entirely beneath us.

We slid down a steep, dark metal chute just as automatic gunfire shredded the living room above us.

We landed hard on a pile of thick gym mats in a sub-basement.

I gasped for air, completely terrified by the descent.

Sarah's furious, screaming voice echoed loudly down the metal chute.

May you like

"Tyler didn't want to divorce you, Giana!" she screamed into the darkness.

"He sold your life to me for ten million dollars!"
