Chapter 1 - The Silent Trap

The encrypted message left my outbox and vanished into the secure servers of my Denver attorney.

I closed the laptop and took a slow breath of the dry Texas air.

For ten years, Victor had assumed my silence was a sign of weakness.

He thought my military deployments meant I was too far away to care about a wooden cabin in the Colorado mountains.

He was about to learn that distance only sharpened my precision.

Thousands of miles away, Victor and my mother were likely packing expensive suitcases for their tropical vacation.

They had no idea that my father had never actually put his name on a standard property deed.

My father was a paranoid, brilliant engineer who secured that land under a classified federal environmental trust.

He legally transferred the trust to my name the day I turned eighteen.

Victor had simply forged my father's signature on a fraudulent civilian document.

Thirty minutes later, my cell phone buzzed violently in my pocket.

It was a blocked number, but I answered it anyway.

I heard the frantic, hyperventilating voice of Victor's real estate broker on the other end.

"Victor, you have to call off the sale right now," the broker screamed, clearly thinking he was talking to my stepfather.

I remained perfectly quiet.

"The buyer's legal team just ran a deep federal background check on the deed," the broker panicked.

"This land belongs to the Department of Defense through a proxy trust, and the named executor is an active military intelligence officer."

I finally spoke.

"You are speaking to that officer," I said calmly.

The line went dead silent.

"W-wait... whose name is on this hidden deed?" the broker stammered in absolute terror.

"Elena Calder," I replied.

"And you just facilitated a massive federal property fraud."

The broker dropped his phone, and I heard it clatter onto a hard floor.

I hung up and smiled.

My phone immediately rang again, and this time, the caller ID showed Victor's name.

I did not answer it.

Let him sweat.

But then a text message popped up on my screen from my attorney, Sloane.

The message made my blood run instantly cold.

"Elena, the buyer isn't a normal civilian developer," Sloane wrote.

"Victor just sold federal land to a known front company for the Vargas Syndicate, and they already wired him two million dollars."
