Chapter 9 - The Airstrip Ambush

I tumbled violently across the rough, wet pavement, my heavy leather jacket absorbing the absolute worst of the devastating impact.
The silver laptop slid across the rain-slicked road, completely miraculously avoiding the crushing tires of the passing vehicles.
I scrambled to my feet, fighting through the intense, agonizing pain radiating from my bruised ribs and my burned neck.
I grabbed the laptop just as the massive black vehicle screeched to a halt, completely blocking the lanes of the suspension bridge.
Arthur and Elena stepped out of the vehicle, holding heavy handguns and looking completely desperate, terrified, and utterly unhinged.
Arthur screamed that the cartel had just threatened to kill him because they discovered the five million dollars came from my account, not his.
He demanded that I hand over the laptop so he could drain the rest of my private lending company's assets to buy his freedom.
I laughed a harsh, bloody laugh, wiping the cold rain from my eyes as I stared down the man who had ruined my life.
I told him that the company accounts were entirely secured by federal biometric locks that he could never possibly bypass.
Elena raised her weapon, her hands shaking violently as she frantically begged Arthur to just shoot me so they could escape.
I slowly backed away toward the edge of the bridge, desperately calculating the terrifying distance to the freezing, dark river below.
I confidently told them that if they shot me, they would absolutely never get a single dime, and the cartel would skin them alive.
Arthur hesitated for a fraction of a second, his pathetic greed violently warring with his overwhelming desire for revenge.
The blaring, deafening sound of multiple police sirens suddenly filled the air as dozens of heavily armed cruisers swarmed the bridge.
Federal agents had finally tracked the massive financial anomalies and intercepted the corrupt detective's rogue radio communications.
Federal agents poured out of their vehicles, aiming high-powered sniper rifles directly at Arthur and his fake sister.
Arthur dropped his handgun to the wet pavement, falling to his knees as he realized his entire empire of lies was completely destroyed.
Elena began to sob uncontrollably, throwing her hands in the air and loudly begging the federal agents for total immunity.

I stood proudly in the freezing rain, clutching the silver laptop containing the absolute proof of my complete innocence.
Before the agents could secure the prisoners, a terrifying, massive explosion completely obliterated the black vehicle parked on the bridge.
