Chapter 6 - The Conditioning

The elation of finding a donor was quickly overshadowed by the brutal reality of the transplant preparation.

"Conditioning," they called it. It was a polite medical term for intentionally destroying Elena's remaining immune system and bone marrow with high-dose radiation and lethal chemotherapy, creating a clean slate for the new donor cells.

It was horrific.

Elena lost the ability to eat. Her mouth was covered in sores. She was placed in strict isolation; I had to scrub in, wear a gown, mask, and gloves just to sit in the same room with her.

On day four of the conditioning, her spirit finally broke.

"I can't do it, Julian," she sobbed weakly, turning her head away from me. "Tell them to stop. Let me go. I just want the pain to stop."

My heart shattered into a million pieces. I stood up, walked to the side of her bed, and leaned down so my masked face was inches from hers.

"Look at me, Elena," I demanded softly. She opened her swollen eyes. "I am not letting you go. We survived the miscarriages. We survived the divorce. We survived the last three months. You are one week away from a brand new life. I know it's hell right now, but I am walking through the fire right beside you."

I placed my gloved hand over her heart. "Keep beating. For me. Please, Elena. We have a whole life left to live."

She looked at me, the tears pooling in her eyes, and gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod.
