Chapter 6 - The Subway Shootout

The three guards did not hesitate to open fire.

Gabriel pushed me violently behind a thick concrete pillar just as bullets shattered the iron door.

Sparks rained down as the rounds ricocheted off the rusted subway tracks.

Gabriel drew his pistol and leaned out from behind the cover.

He fired twice, striking the closest guard square in the chest.

The man collapsed, but the other two immediately laid down heavy suppressive fire.

"I only have three bullets left," Gabriel yelled over the deafening noise.

He was incredibly pale, and his hands were beginning to shake from severe blood loss.

I looked around the abandoned platform, my mind racing to find a way out.

My eyes landed on an old, rusted electrical breaker box mounted on the wall nearby.

I remembered my mother telling me about the dangers of exposed copper wires in the factory.

"Keep them distracted!" I shouted to Gabriel.

Gabriel nodded, firing another shot that forced the guards to duck behind a ruined ticket booth.

I crawled on my stomach, ignoring the sharp debris cutting into my knees.

I reached the breaker box and yanked the metal cover open.

Inside, a tangle of thick wires hummed with ancient, unstable electricity.

I grabbed a discarded metal pipe from the floor.

"Cover your eyes!" I screamed at Gabriel.

I smashed the metal pipe directly into the glowing electrical panel.

A massive explosion of blue sparks and blinding light erupted through the station.

The deafening pop temporarily blinded the two remaining guards.

Gabriel used the distraction perfectly.

He stepped out of cover and fired his final two bullets with lethal precision.

Both guards dropped to the floor, instantly neutralized.

The station plunged into a heavy, ringing silence.

I dropped the metal pipe, my hands shaking violently as the adrenaline faded.

Gabriel walked over to me, leaning heavily on the concrete pillar for support.

"You are much more than just a maid, Elena," he smiled faintly.

Then his eyes rolled back in his head, and he collapsed entirely onto the dirty concrete floor.

I dropped to my knees, shaking his broad shoulders frantically.

His heart had stopped beating.
