Chapter 6 - THE AUDIO TAPE

Victor Kael was a paranoid man. He recorded all his phone calls with his wealthy clients as an "insurance policy." We sat in Tommy’s van, plugging Victor’s encrypted hard drive into a laptop.
Tommy clicked on an audio file dated three weeks ago.
My mother’s cold, aristocratic voice filled the van.
“Victor, the girl is still in the city. I thought I told you to get rid of her.”
“Mrs. Thorne, she has a lease. I can't just throw her out without a court order.”
“Then forge one. I don't care what you have to do. Break her windows. Shut off her heat. Marcus cannot find out about that child. If he sees that little girl, he’ll know she’s his. I paid that tramp two hundred thousand dollars to disappear six years ago, and I am not letting her ruin my family’s legacy now.”
I stared at the laptop screen, my blood boiling. It was a full confession. Blackmail, extortion, and illegal harassment.
"Is this admissible in court?" I asked Tommy.
"In family court? It’s a nuclear bomb," Tommy smiled. "But why wait for court? Eleanor is hosting the annual City General Hospital Charity Gala tomorrow night. All her high-society friends, the hospital board, and the press will be there."

I looked at the audio file. My mother cared about one thing above all else: her pristine public image.
"Copy the file," I said. "We’re going to a party."
