Chapter 4 - THE LEGAL AMBUSH

Sarah was asleep, and Mia was resting on a cot in the corner of the ICU room when the nightmare escalated.
The next morning, two men in sharp, tailored suits walked into the ICU waiting area. One of them was holding a thick manila envelope. I recognized him instantly. It was Richard Vance, my mother’s ruthless corporate attorney.
"Marcus," Richard said smoothly. "We need to talk."
"I have nothing to say to you or my mother," I growled, stepping into the hallway.
"You might want to read this first," Richard said, handing me the envelope.
I ripped it open. It was an emergency ex-parte custody order signed by a family court judge who I knew frequently golfed with my mother.
"What the hell is this?" I demanded.
"It’s an emergency petition for temporary guardianship of the minor, Mia Jenkins," Richard smiled. "Given that the mother is currently incapacitated in the ICU, and you have no legal established paternity, the state requires the child to be placed in a safe environment. Your mother, as a concerned citizen and potential relative, has generously offered her estate."
"You're trying to take my daughter to the woman who tried to ruin her mother?" I shouted.
"Keep your voice down, Marcus," Richard warned. "Child Protective Services is in the lobby. If you fight this right now, the child goes into the foster system. If you let Eleanor take her, she stays in a five-star home. Your choice."
It was a trap. If Mia went into the system, my mother would use her wealth to adopt her out from under us. If she went to my mother’s estate, Eleanor would use her as leverage to force Sarah to disappear again.
I looked at the legal documents. I had 48 hours until the formal hearing.
"Tell CPS they can leave," I said, my voice turning to ice. "Mia is staying with me. I’m submitting an emergency paternity affidavit downstairs right now, and as a licensed first responder, I have emergency medical power of attorney."

Richard sneered. "You can't afford a lawyer to fight us, Marcus. You're just a paramedic. Eleanor will crush you in court."
"Tell my mother to wear a nice suit to the hearing," I said. "Because I’m bringing hell with me."
