Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

A massive black helicopter with federal markings suddenly descended over the bank's parking lot.
The powerful downwash from the rotors kicked up dust and debris, blinding the corrupt officers.
Five black armored vehicles smashed through the security gates, completely surrounding Vance's cruisers.
Dozens of heavily armed FBI tactical agents poured out of the vehicles.
"FBI! Drop your weapons immediately!" a commanding voice boomed over a loudspeaker.
Vance froze in sheer terror, his arrogant smirk melting into absolute panic.
He realized he was vastly outgunned and outmatched.
He slowly lowered his weapon and dropped it onto the asphalt.
Laura let out a massive sigh of relief, collapsing against the side of a police cruiser.
"How did they get here so fast?" Mike asked, holding his bleeding shoulder.
"I didn't just email the files," Laura smiled weakly.
"I emailed the GPS location of the vault and triggered the federal bank robbery alarm."
An older man in a tailored suit walked over to them, flashing an FBI badge.
"Special Agent Carter," the man introduced himself.
"We have been trying to build a case against Richard Vincent for three years."
"You just handed us the entire criminal enterprise on a silver platter."
Paramedics rushed onto the scene, loading Mike onto a stretcher to treat his gunshot wound.
Other agents dragged a screaming, handcuffed Richard Vincent out of the bank lobby.
Elena wept openly, finally realizing the nightmare was truly over.
"My father's death wasn't in vain," Elena whispered, watching Vincent being shoved into a federal transport.
Agent Carter turned to Laura with a look of profound respect.
"You are a very brave woman, Ms. Bennett," he said sincerely.
"We will make sure the kidnapping warrant is scrubbed from the system immediately."
"Where is Caleb?" Laura asked, suddenly realizing the boy was missing.
"He is safe," Elena smiled, pointing toward a black SUV.
Caleb was sitting in the back of the federal vehicle, wrapped in a warm blanket and drinking hot cocoa.
Laura walked over to the SUV and opened the door.
Caleb looked up at her with a bright, genuine smile that melted her heart.
"Did the bad men go away?" Caleb asked softly.
"They are gone forever, sweetheart," Laura promised, hugging him tightly.
"You don't have to be afraid to sleep anymore."
Caleb reached into his pocket and pulled out a single, shiny quarter.
"Can I still open my savings account tomorrow?" he asked innocently.
Laura laughed, tears of joy spilling over her cheeks.

"First thing in the morning, Caleb," Laura promised.
The entire criminal empire that had terrorized Maple Ridge was finally destroyed in a single night.
