Chapter 10 - The Price of Safety

Three months passed, and the crisp autumn air finally brought peace to Maple Ridge.

The FBI had arrested over twenty corrupt officials, including Deputy Chief Vance.

Richard Vincent was denied bail and was awaiting trial in a federal penitentiary.

Mike made a full recovery from his gunshot wound and was promoted to Chief of Police.

He spent his first week cleaning house, firing every officer who had taken a bribe.

Elena and Caleb had moved into a beautiful new apartment on the safe side of town.

The federal government had unfrozen her father's legitimate assets, leaving them financially secure.

Laura was sitting at her polished wooden desk in Ridge Community Bank, sipping warm coffee.

The lobby was quiet, filled only with the pleasant hum of normal daily business.

The glass doors opened, and Caleb walked in wearing a brand new red jacket.

He wasn't carrying a heavy pickle jar this time.

He confidently walked up to Sarah's old teller window, which was now occupied by a friendly new employee.

He proudly handed the teller a five-dollar bill to deposit into his official savings account.

Laura watched him from her office, feeling a profound sense of pride and accomplishment.

She had risked her entire life for a stranger, and she would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Mike walked into the bank holding a bouquet of flowers and a charming smile.

He walked into Laura's office and placed the flowers on her desk.

"I thought the bravest bank manager in Ohio deserved a proper date tonight," Mike said smoothly.

Laura laughed, blushing slightly as she accepted the beautiful arrangement.

"I would love that, Chief Harlan," she replied, locking her computer screen.

They walked out of the bank together, waving goodbye to Caleb and his mother.

The sun was shining brightly, and the shadows of the past had completely vanished.

Everything was finally perfect.

A thick black envelope was waiting on Laura's desk the next morning.

Inside was a single photograph of Caleb walking into her bank, taken from a high angle.

Vincent was nothing.
