Chapter 2 - The Fire Alarm

Screams erupted through the elegant dining room as the armed men systematically locked the front doors.

Diners dove under their tables, crystal glasses shattering against the hardwood floors in the chaos.

Pierre stood frozen near the host stand, his face completely pale as one of the gunmen aimed a weapon directly at him.

I felt a strong, unyielding hand grab my arm and pull me violently behind the thick marble pillar next to Table Nine.

It was Bellamy.

His two security guards had already drawn sleek, matte-black pistols from their shoulder holsters, positioning themselves perfectly to shield us.

"Who are they?" I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

"They are here for the key," Bellamy answered quietly, his blue eyes scanning the room with terrifying calm.

"My grandmother's necklace? Why would a tactical strike team want a piece of old jewelry?" I demanded in hushed panic.

"Because my father didn't just leave an estate, Clare. He left an empire, and that key opens the central vault," he explained quickly.

One of the gunmen fired a single, deafening shot into the ceiling, raining plaster down onto the white tablecloths.

"Nobody moves, and nobody speaks!" the leader shouted, his voice muffled by a heavy black tactical mask.

"We are looking for a waitress named Clare Maro. Bring her out, and the rest of you live."

My blood ran entirely cold.

They weren't just here for Bellamy; they had actively tracked me down to my workplace.

Bellamy pulled a sleek, encrypted smartphone from his pocket and pressed a single button on the side.

"What are you doing?" I asked, trembling uncontrollably.

"I am triggering the building's emergency fire suppression system," he replied casually.

A sudden, deafening mechanical alarm blared through the restaurant, accompanied by flashing strobe lights.

Seconds later, massive torrents of white, chemical foam sprayed aggressively from the ceiling vents, instantly filling the room with an impenetrable fog.

"Move, now!" Bellamy ordered, grabbing my hand and pulling me toward the kitchen corridor.

We sprinted blindly through the thick foam, the sounds of confused shouting and blind gunfire echoing behind us.

His security men covered our retreat, laying down precise, suppressive fire to keep the masked men pinned down.

We burst through the kitchen’s swinging doors, nearly colliding with a terrified line cook.

"Out the back exit, don't look back!" Bellamy yelled to the kitchen staff, ushering them toward safety.

We reached the heavy steel door of the loading dock, but as Bellamy pushed it open, a massive figure stepped out from the shadows of the alley.

It was a sixth gunman, holding a heavy shotgun leveled directly at my chest.

Before Bellamy could react, the gunman racked the slide and said, "End of the line, sweetheart."
