Chapter 6 - The Betrayal

Mr. Davis let out a blood-curdling scream, dropping the forceps onto the wooden floor.

He stumbled backward, clutching his right hand as the black wires immediately began burrowing into his flesh.

"No, no, no!" he shrieked, falling heavily against the kitchen counters.

I watched in pure horror as thick, black veins instantly shot up his arm, traveling rapidly toward his neck.

"Get out of here, Sarah!" he choked out, his voice already beginning to sound strangely metallic.

"It is taking over my nervous system, I won't be able to stop myself!"

I did not hesitate for a single second.

I grabbed a roll of medical gauze, pressing it tightly against the small incision on Chloe's neck.

Her eyes had returned to their normal, beautiful blue color, and she was crying softly from the pain.

"I got you, baby, I've got you," I whispered, scooping her up into my arms along with the federal intelligence files Mr. Davis had brought.

I sprinted out of the cabin, leaving the screaming man behind as the parasite consumed his brain.

I threw Chloe into the front seat of the stolen security car and locked all the doors.

I turned the ignition key, slamming the car into reverse just as the front door of the cabin violently burst open.

Mr. Davis walked out onto the porch, but he was no longer moving like a human being.

His head twitched in sharp, robotic increments, and his eyes were entirely pitch black.

I hit the gas, speeding wildly down the dirt road and kicking up a massive cloud of snow and gravel.

I checked the rearview mirror, expecting to see him shrinking into the distance.

Instead, I screamed out loud.

Mr. Davis was sprinting after the car at an impossible, terrifying speed, easily matching the vehicle's momentum.

His face was completely devoid of any emotion, his legs pumping furiously as he gained ground on us.

I pushed the gas pedal entirely to the floor, my tires slipping dangerously on the icy mountain curves.

He lunged forward, his bare hands slamming violently onto the back windshield of my car.

The glass cracked in a massive spiderweb pattern, threatening to shatter entirely.

I threw the steering wheel sharply to the right, purposefully swiping the back of the car against a large pine tree.

The brutal impact ripped him off the trunk, sending his body tumbling into the snowy ditch.

I did not stop driving until we reached the empty parking lot of an abandoned shopping mall on the edge of the city.

I finally stopped to breathe, opening the encrypted federal files to find a way to end this nightmare.

The first page contained a detailed map, and it revealed a truth that made my blood run cold.

The main control server broadcasting the signal to the parasites was not located at a high-tech corporate facility.

It was located directly beneath the cafeteria of Oak Creek Elementary.
