Chapter 10 - The Cure

The black synthetic wires beneath Chloe's skin instantly dissolved into a fine, harmless gray dust.
The dark lines faded away completely, leaving only the pale, unblemished skin of my beautiful daughter.
Chloe collapsed back against the car seat, her chest rising and falling in deep, peaceful breaths.
Her eyes fluttered open, completely free of the terrifying black darkness, shining bright blue under the parking lot lights.
"Mommy?" she whispered, her voice entirely her own again.
"Does your throat hurt, baby?" I asked, sobbing uncontrollably as I pulled her into my arms.
She swallowed carefully, a small, tired smile spreading across her face.
"No, Mommy, it doesn't hurt anymore."
I held her tightly as dozens of police cruisers, ambulances, and actual federal agents swarmed the burning school.
The nightmare was finally over.
The federal authorities used the evidence I recovered to completely dismantle Apex Bio.
Every single executive involved in the illegal neural trials was arrested and sentenced to life in a federal penitentiary.
Mrs. Henderson did not survive the collapse of the underground server room, taking her corrupt secrets to the grave.
The children of Oak Creek Elementary all fully recovered, the sonic frequency having successfully destroyed every parasite in town.
Because I had secured the critical evidence and saved countless lives, Apex Bio was forced to pay an astronomical settlement to the victims' families.
Six months later, I had completely left my exhausting corporate job and moved Chloe to a beautiful, quiet town near the ocean.
We lived in a massive house with a large garden, free from the stress of bills and the terrifying memories of our past.
Life was perfectly peaceful, boring, and absolutely wonderful.
I stood in our new, bright kitchen, humming softly to myself as I poured a glass of fresh lemonade for Chloe.
I opened the freezer door, popping a few crystal-clear ice cubes out of the plastic tray and dropping them into the glass.
May you like
I smiled, picking up the cold drink and turning toward the living room where Chloe was watching cartoons.
But as the ice cube slowly melted into the yellow liquid, a tiny, microscopic black thread swam out from the center of the ice and slipped quietly down toward the bottom of the glass.
