Chapter 8 - The Boathouse Confrontation

Clara lifted her battered face, her eyes burning with fierce, unbroken defiance.

Though eight years of captivity had made her frail and pale, the resemblance to her late mother was breathtaking.

“You murdered my mother,” Clara choked out, spitting blood onto the legal papers Julian held before her.

“You and Victoria staged the crash, and you locked me away like an animal,” Clara whispered through cracked lips.

Julian’s face twisted into an ugly, furious scowl as he wiped the blood from the document.

“Your mother was going to divorce me and take every cent of this family’s empire,” Julian hissed.

“I built this fortune with my own hands, and I will not let a child take it away from me,” Julian snarled.

Victoria checked her diamond-encrusted wristwatch and stepped toward the wooden boat dock.

“We have seven minutes until midnight, Julian,” Victoria said, unscrewing the cap of the fuel container.

“Stop wasting time talking to this miserable brat,” Victoria urged as gasoline sloshed across the wooden floorboards.

“Pour the fuel into the hull, weigh the boat down, and scuttle it in the middle of the lake,” Victoria ordered.

Julian reached inside his tailored tuxedo jacket and pulled out a snub-nosed revolver.

He cocked the heavy hammer with a loud, mechanical click that resonated across the cavernous boathouse.

“You are right, darling,” Julian said, raising the barrel until it rested against Clara’s forehead.

“A gunshot wound is easier to explain if the body ever surfaces,” Julian said calmly.

Marcus did not wait another fraction of a second.

He kicked the wooden door off its frame with a thunderous crash, raising his service weapon with both hands.

“Drop the weapon, Montgomery!” Marcus roared across the boathouse, his voice cutting through the storm outside.

Julian spun around in surprise, pulling the trigger blindly in panic.

The bullet cracked past Marcus’s shoulder, shattering the hanging halogen light bulb directly above the doorway.

Sparks rained down into the shadows as the boathouse plunged into the dim orange glow of the backup emergency lights.

Sarah immediately stepped through the doorway, holding her smartphone high with the satellite broadcast transmitter humming softly.

“You are live on forty national television networks and every streaming platform in America, Julian!” Sarah shouted.

The red recording light on Sarah’s phone pulsed brightly, capturing Julian’s stunned, horrified expression in high resolution.

Victoria screamed in pure rage, realizing her entire empire was crumbling before her eyes.

She snatched a heavy marine flare from the wall rack, struck the ignition cap, and lunged directly toward Lily.
