Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

Marcus lunged forward in the darkness, tackling Sarah and Lily behind the heavy oak kitchen island.

A fraction of a second later, the wooden front door splintered into fragments under a tactical breaching charge.

Flashbang grenades bounced into the center of the living room, detonating with deafening roars and blinding white light.

Marcus kept his eyes shut tight, shielding Lily’s small body beneath his own torso.

Suppressed automatic fire chewed through the drywall above their heads, sending plaster raining down like snow.

“Back exit!” Marcus shouted over the ringing in his ears, drawing his sidearm.

He popped up from behind the island and fired two shots at the muzzle flashes in the doorway.

A grunt echoed through the smoke as the point operative collapsed onto the floor.

Sarah grabbed Lily’s arm and led her toward an old commercial laundry chute hidden inside the storage pantry.

“Jump through, Lily! There are laundry carts at the bottom!” Sarah urged gently.

Lily hesitated for a brief second, then dropped feet-first down the metal chute into the darkness below.

Sarah slid in immediately after her.

Marcus fired his remaining rounds to suppress the advancing gunmen before diving into the opening.

He landed hard on a mountain of discarded linens in the warehouse basement just as footsteps pounded above.

They scrambled out through a basement delivery window into the stormy downpour outside.

Sarah guided them to an unmarked, ten-year-old sedan parked inside an abandoned auto repair garage down the block.

They piled into the vehicle, and Sarah gunned the engine, tearing down the alley with the headlights completely off.

In the back seat, Lily grabbed a notepad and a pen from the seat pocket.

She began writing with deliberate, shaky strokes, pressing hard enough to tear the thin paper.

Marcus turned around from the passenger seat to look at what she had written.

The word on the page was: SISTER.

Beneath it, she wrote: They kept us in the dark. I crawled through the ventilation pipe two nights ago.

Marcus looked into Lily’s eyes, realizing the horrifying truth that had remained hidden for nearly a decade.

Lily was not just a runaway street kid; she was Clara’s younger half-sister, born in captivity and kept hidden from the world.

Sarah looked into the rearview mirror, her eyes wide with shock and grief.

“Clara is still alive in that cellar,” Sarah whispered, tears forming in her eyes.

Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out the burner phone he had stripped off the fallen gunman during the breach.

The phone vibrated violently against his palm, illuminating the dark cabin of the speeding car.

A single text message flashed on the lock screen from an unsaved number.

The message read: Move the girl to the incinerator behind the boathouse; finish it before the press conference at midnight.
