Chapter 6 - The Intrusion

Oakbridge Preparatory was empty on Saturday, save for the elite robotics team who were using the lab to rebuild their project after the bus crash. Julian was among them, quietly soldering wires, his usual arrogance replaced by a haunted, quiet focus.

The rain from yesterday had turned into a thick, blinding fog, blanketing the isolated mountain campus.

At 4:15 PM, the power went out.

The backup generators didn't kick in. The campus was plunged into total darkness.

"Everyone stay calm," Mr. Larkin, the teacher, said, turning on his phone flashlight. "Probably just a blown transformer from the storm. I'll go check the breaker."

Before he could reach the door, the heavy oak doors of the robotics lab swung open.

Standing in the threshold wasn't Mr. Larkin. It was Elena. She wore dark tactical clothing, her weapon suppressed and drawn, her eyes scanning the dark room with thermal-vision goggles pushed up on her forehead.

"Commander?" Julian whispered, stepping back.

"Not a sound," Elena ordered, moving quickly into the room and locking the heavy deadbolt. "Get away from the windows."

"What's going on?" Chloe whimpered.

"Three SUVs just breached the southern gate," Elena said, her voice a calm, chilling whisper. "Twelve heavily armed men. They cut the hardlines and jammed the cell signals. They are here to kidnap Julian, and they will kill anyone who gets in their way."

The students froze in absolute terror.

"Listen to me," Elena said, crouching down to their eye level. "You survive this by doing exactly what I say. I am going to get you into the maintenance tunnels. You will run to the old boiler room and lock the reinforced door. Do you understand?"

"What about you?" Julian asked, his voice shaking.

Elena racked the slide of her pistol. "I'm going to teach them why you don't mess with my bus route."
