Chapter 10 - The Next Journey

Six months later.

The morning sun hit the Oakbridge Preparatory campus, melting the last of the winter snow.

Julian Vance stood on the front steps, adjusting his tie. He didn't have a trust fund anymore. The government had frozen the family's assets. He was attending Oakbridge on a probationary scholarship, living in a small apartment with his aunt.

He didn't miss the money. For the first time in his life, he felt like he actually had to earn his place in the world.

A sleek, black government SUV pulled up to the curb.

The window rolled down, revealing Elena. She wasn't wearing a bus uniform anymore. She wore a sharp, tailored suit. The scars on her neck were visible, worn not with shame, but with the quiet dignity of a survivor. The Department of Defense had offered her old command back, but she declined. Instead, she had taken over as the Regional Director of a private security firm that specialized in anti-terrorism.

"Need a ride, Julian?" she asked.

Julian smiled, walking down the steps. "Are you sure you know how to use the GPS on this thing?"

Elena smirked, unlocking the doors. "I know the road."

Julian climbed into the passenger seat. He looked at the woman who had saved his life twice—once from a burning wreck, and once from the toxic entitlement that had been destroying his soul.

"Thank you, Commander," Julian said quietly. "For everything."

"You did good in that chemistry lab, kid," Elena said, putting the SUV in gear. "But next time, stay in the boiler room."

They drove down the mountain together, leaving the past behind, the long, winding road ahead of them wide open and clear.
