Chapter 9 - The Choice

The entire cabin fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

Alessandro stared at the silver revolver resting in his trembling, blood-stained hand.

Carmine took a seat on a leather sofa, sipping his bourbon with an expression of mild amusement.

The armed guards raised their rifles, waiting for Alessandro to make his impossible choice.

I looked at the man who had just risked his life in a freezing river to save my child.

I knew he was the only person in the world who could protect Mia from these monsters.

I adjusted Mia in my arms, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead before looking directly at Alessandro.

I nodded slightly, giving him silent permission to take my life to save hers.

Alessandro's dark eyes filled with a profound, agonizing sorrow.

He slowly raised the revolver and pointed the barrel directly at the center of my forehead.

He whispered a heartbreaking apology that only I could hear.

I closed my eyes tightly, accepting my fate and praying that Mia would grow up knowing how much I loved her.

I waited for the deafening crack of the gunshot and the sudden darkness of death.

The heavy gunshot rang out, echoing violently against the walls of the luxury cabin.

But I did not feel any pain.

I opened my eyes and saw Don Carmine clutching his throat as dark blood spilled over his pristine white suit.

Alessandro had spun around at the very last second and fired the single bullet directly into the crime boss.

Carmine collapsed onto the glass coffee table, shattering it completely.

Total chaos erupted in the cabin as the guards realized their leader was dead.

Alessandro did not hesitate.

He lunged forward, grabbing a discarded rifle from a stunned guard.

He moved with ruthless precision, unleashing a hail of bullets that neutralized the remaining threats in seconds.

The room finally grew quiet, filled only with the smell of smoke and copper.

Alessandro dropped the empty rifle and turned toward me with a victorious, exhausted smile.

Before he could take a single step, his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed heavily onto the wooden deck.
