Chapter 6 - The Freezing Depths

Marcus smiled down at me, his eyes wide and completely manic.

He told me he knew Alessandro would run for the emergency boats because it was standard syndicate protocol.

He kicked Alessandro in his injured side, sending the mafia boss collapsing to the wet floorboards.

I screamed and lunged forward, but Marcus grabbed my hair and threw me backward.

He snatched Mia from my arms with ruthless force.

My daughter began to wail in absolute terror as she was held by the monster who fathered her.

Marcus walked to the edge of the speeding boat and dangled my baby over the freezing, churning water.

Alessandro struggled to his knees, aiming his pistol at Marcus's chest.

Marcus laughed and told him that if he pulled the trigger, the baby would fall into the river.

Alessandro slowly lowered the gun, offering Marcus all of his territory and wealth in exchange for Mia's life.

Marcus spat on the deck and said he did not care about territory or money anymore.

He said he only wanted to watch the great Alessandro Duca suffer the ultimate defeat.

I knew Marcus was going to drop her simply because he enjoyed cruelty.

I slowly slid my hand toward the emergency marine kit mounted on the wall near the steering console.

I unlatched the plastic box and pulled out a bright orange flare gun.

I did not hesitate or issue a warning.

I aimed the flare gun directly at Marcus's face and pulled the heavy trigger.

The burning red projectile struck him squarely in the chest, igniting his jacket instantly.

Marcus screamed in agonizing pain and stumbled backward over the low railing.

He fell into the dark, icy water of the river.

But as he fell, his grip tightened, and he dragged my helpless daughter over the edge with him.
