Chapter 7 - The True Motive

My hands were shaking violently as I stared at the terrifying surveillance photos scattered across the desk.

The heavy oak door to the study suddenly creaked open, and Ryan stepped inside.

He stopped completely dead in his tracks the second he saw the open black folder in my hands.

"Ellie, I can explain everything," he said, his voice dropping to a low, desperate plea.

I backed away from him, clutching the undeniable evidence of his complete deception against my chest.

"You have been stalking me for three years?" I yelled, hot tears of betrayal spilling down my cheeks.

"Our meeting at the wedding wasn't a coincidence, was it?"

Ryan closed his eyes for a brief, agonizing second before nodding slowly.

"No, it was not a coincidence, but I am not the villain you think I am," he pleaded.

He walked to the desk and pulled out a massive topographical map of my hometown.

"The Sterlings are trying to build a billion-dollar casino resort right in the middle of your neighborhood."

He traced a red circle on the map, highlighting the exact location of my father's small diner.

"Your diner is the absolute center of their massive development plan."

"They tried to buy it from your father for years, but he always refused to sell."

The sickening truth slowly began to unravel in my mind, making me feel physically ill.

"Daniel didn't leave me because I wasn't ambitious enough, did he?" I whispered, my voice breaking.

"No," Ryan answered softly, his eyes filled with genuine, profound sorrow.

"The Sterlings paid Daniel a million dollars to break your heart and leave you completely bankrupt."

"They knew you couldn't pay the debts alone, forcing you to finally sell the diner to them."

Ryan explained he had been monitoring the Sterlings' illegal activities to protect his own company.

He stepped in at the wedding to save the diner and ruin their vicious, manipulative plan.

Before I could even process the massive betrayal of my past, my cell phone buzzed loudly in my pocket.

It was an unknown number, but I answered it with a trembling hand.

"Ellie, you have to help us!" Vanessa’s terrified voice screamed through the speaker.

"They took Daniel, they kidnapped him right out of his apartment!"

A cold, unfamiliar male voice suddenly ripped the phone away from Daniel's sister.
