Chapter 7 - The Siege

I scrambled frantically across the debris-covered floor, absolutely determined to stop Vanessa from reaching my children. I raised the heavy pistol Luca had given me, my hands shaking violently as I aimed at my own sister. I screamed at her to step away from the steel door right now or I would absolutely shoot her. Vanessa laughed out loud, producing a cold and hollow sound that completely lacked any human empathy. She mocked my sudden bravery, claiming I was always far too weak to survive in her ruthless world. She took another highly confident step toward the basement stairs leading to my babies. I squeezed the trigger, firing a loud warning shot that completely shattered the wooden cabinet directly beside her head. Vanessa finally froze in place, realizing I was no longer the naive sister she had easily manipulated years ago. Meanwhile, Luca unleashed a brutal barrage of return gunfire from his position behind the heavy oak sofa. He expertly eliminated three of Vanessa's highly trained mercenaries, forcing the rest to retreat toward the porch. The sudden shift in momentum caused Vanessa's arrogant and confident smile to falter completely. She realized the ambush was rapidly failing and reached into her pristine white coat for her own weapon. Before she could fully draw her gun, Luca vaulted over the sofa and sprinted across the ruined living room. He tackled Vanessa aggressively to the ground, firmly pinning her hands behind her back. I rushed to the panic room stairs and securely locked the steel door from the outside to protect the twins. I felt a massive wave of absolute relief wash over me as Luca dragged my treacherous sister to her feet. We had actually survived the assault and won the seemingly impossible battle. Then, the unmistakable sound of a heavy gun cocking echoed from the dark corner of the kitchen. Luca's most trusted lieutenant stepped out of the shadows, holding a pistol aimed directly at my head.
