Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

Luca stumbled weakly out of the burning debris, completely covered in dark soot and bleeding from a deep cut on his forehead. He had miraculously managed to detach the primary charge just seconds before the secondary bombs destroyed the structure. I ran toward him with the twins, collapsing entirely into his arms as we all wept with overwhelming and profound relief. The terrible nightmare that had violently haunted our family for three agonizing years was finally over completely. Within hours, Luca's loyal enforcers arrived to fully secure the area and track down the remaining mercenaries. They found Vanessa hiding cowardly in a nearby town and handed her directly over to the federal authorities without hesitation. With the undeniable and massive evidence of her criminal syndicate, she was sentenced to spend the rest of her life in a maximum-security prison. Six months later, we were living happily in a beautiful, heavily guarded estate on the peaceful coast of Maine. The terrifying and violent world of the Chicago mafia was permanently left behind in exchange for a quiet, completely legitimate life. Luca spent every single waking moment making up for lost time, completely devoted to being a loving and present father. Ash no longer watched the world with silent caution, choosing instead to laugh loudly while playing freely in the yard. Lena absolutely adored her father, strictly demanding that he read her a bedtime story every single night without fail. Our broken marriage was fully restored, powerfully built on a brand new foundation of absolute truth and unbreakable trust. I stood on the back porch, watching my amazing husband chase our beautiful children across the green lawn. I smiled warmly, knowing deeply that we had finally secured the happy ending we so desperately deserved. Later that evening, a mysterious courier delivered an anonymous package wrapped entirely in simple brown paper. Luca opened the small wooden box inside, his relaxed expression instantly draining of all color. Inside rested a silver coin stamped with a black serpent, completely identical to the one his late father used to carry. A handwritten note placed at the bottom simply read, "Vanessa was only the middleman, and the true debt is still unpaid."
