Chapter 7 - The Final Betrayal

Donovan was dragged out of the motel and thrown into the trunk of a black Mercedes. He rode in suffocating darkness, his mind fracturing. His entire life had been a lie, and now, the universe was violently correcting the balance.
When the trunk finally popped open, the smell of salt and diesel flooded Donovan’s senses. He was hauled out onto a private dock at the Port of Miami. The moon reflected off the black water of the Atlantic.
Elias and Volkov stood at the edge of the pier.
"You owe Viktor twenty million dollars," Elias said, walking toward the kneeling Donovan. "Money you lost on bad tech investments. But there is one thing you still have of value."
"What?" Donovan sobbed, blood trailing from his lip. "I have nothing!"
"You have your brother," Elias said softly.
Julian Cross was a respected state senator. He was the golden boy of the family, built on clean money and political influence. But Elias knew the truth. Julian’s initial campaign had been entirely funded by Donovan’s dirty hedge fund money.
"Call him," Elias commanded, dropping the burner phone in front of Donovan. "Tell Julian to wire his entire campaign war chest—fifteen million dollars—to Viktor's offshore account tonight. Or you go into the ocean."
"If I do that, his political career is over! It will trigger a federal audit!" Donovan cried.
"That sounds like Julian's problem," Volkov rumbled. "Make the call."
Trembling, Donovan dialed his brother. When Julian answered, Donovan begged. He wept. He pleaded for his life, asking his brother to drain the campaign accounts to save him.
There was a long, agonizing silence on the phone.
"I can't, Donny," Julian finally whispered. "I have a wife. I have kids. If I do this, I go to federal prison. I'm sorry. You're on your own."

Julian hung up.
Donovan stared at the phone, utterly broken. Even his own blood had abandoned him.
