Chapter 1 - The Ghost at the Gates

The Diamond Pavilion was bathed in the warm, amber glow of twilight and hundred-thousand-dollar lighting rigs. Waiters in crisp white linen circulated with silver trays of Beluga caviar and vintage Krug champagne. Donovan Cross stood at the edge of the vanishing pool, the ocean breeze ruffling his custom-tailored linen suit. He was five minutes away from securing a fifty-million-dollar capital injection from Arthur Vance, a notoriously conservative oil tycoon.

"Your portfolio is aggressive, Donovan," Vance said, swirling his scotch. "But I like your style. You don't just chase the market; you dictate it."

Donovan flashed his signature, blinding smile. "The market is a beast, Arthur. You just have to know how to hold the leash."

He raised his glass, preparing to toast to his salvation, when the string quartet abruptly stopped playing.

The silence that fell over the four-acre compound was immediate and terrifying. Donovan turned. Walking through the crushed-marble courtyard, ignoring the frantic protests of the private security team, was a man who had no business being alive, let alone in Palm Beach.

He wore a faded leather jacket and heavy boots that crunched loudly against the imported marble. His face was weathered, scarred by time and brutality, but his eyes burned with a familiar, cold fire.

Donovan’s champagne flute slipped from his fingers, shattering against the pool deck.

"Elias," Donovan breathed, all the blood draining from his sharp jaw.

Elias Thorne had been Donovan’s founding partner ten years ago. He was also the man Donovan had framed for wire fraud, leaving him to rot in a brutal Panamanian prison while Donovan stole their company and rebranded it into his current empire.

Elias stopped ten feet away, smiling a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Hello, Donny. Nice house. Pity your lease expires on Monday."

Vance frowned, looking between the two men. "Donovan? Who is this man? What does he mean, lease?"

Elias didn't give Donovan a chance to spin his lies. He pulled a thick, waterproof dossier from his jacket and tossed it onto a glass cocktail table. "It means, Mr. Vance, that Donovan Cross is a fraud. He doesn't own this estate. He rented it on an over-leveraged credit line. He is completely bankrupt. And that dossier contains the routing numbers proving he's been running a Ponzi scheme to pay off his early investors."

The crowd of billionaires gasped. Donovan felt the earth open beneath him. The ghost of his past had just set his house of cards on fire.
