Chapter 2 - The Silent Housekeeper

Julian shoved the journal and the key beneath his oversized grey sweater just as the kitchen’s service door swung open.

Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, stepped into the room. She was a stern, imposing woman in her sixties, known for her absolute silence. Victoria had hired her specifically because Mrs. Gable was purportedly deaf and mute, guaranteeing no household secrets would ever be whispered to the press.

Mrs. Gable stopped. Her cold eyes flicked from Julian’s trembling frame to the slightly ajar baseboard panel.

Julian froze. If she signaled Victoria, it was over. Victoria would lock him in the cellar, and his father would die.

But Mrs. Gable didn't reach for her pager. Instead, she walked to the locked refrigerator, pulled a small, unauthorized magnetic keycard from her apron, and swiped it over the biometric scanner. The heavy door clicked open. She reached in, pulled out a cold roast beef sandwich wrapped in wax paper, and placed it on the black quartz island.

Then, she looked directly at Julian and spoke.

"Eat it quickly," Mrs. Gable said, her voice raspy from years of disuse, but perfectly clear. "She will be back from her phone call in five minutes."

Julian stared at her in absolute shock. "You can hear me. You can speak."

"Your father paid me very well to pretend otherwise," she replied, her face softening into a grim, deeply sorrowful expression. "I was his fail-safe. But when she poisoned him, I couldn't act without exposing myself and getting us both killed. I’ve been waiting for you to find the drawer, Julian. You are eleven now. You are old enough to understand what we have to do."

Julian tore into the sandwich, the food hitting his empty stomach like a jolt of electricity. "She’s killing him."

"She is keeping him barely alive," Mrs. Gable corrected, wiping the counter clean. "If Arthur dies, the generational trust triggers an automatic federal audit. Victoria needs him alive until she can fully liquidate the offshore assets and secure absolute power of attorney. We have less than a week."

Julian swallowed hard, his eyes locking onto the older woman's. "How do I get into the East Wing?"
