Chapter 10 - The New Legacy

Six months later.
The obsidian kitchen had been entirely demolished. In its place, a warm, sprawling room of natural oak and sunlight had been built. The smell of freshly baked bread filled the air.
Julian sat at the new island, laughing. Mrs. Gable, sporting a small scar on her temple but smiling warmly, was pulling a tray of pastries from the oven. She didn't pretend to be deaf or mute anymore. She was the heart of the house.
The soft whir of a motorized wheelchair caught Julian’s attention.
Arthur Vance rolled into the kitchen. He was thin, and his speech was slow, but the thallium was out of his system. The physical therapy was working. He was alive.
"Smells incredible, Mrs. Gable," Arthur said, his voice raspy but full of genuine warmth.
"Only the best for you, Mr. Vance," she replied, setting a pastry in front of him.
Julian walked over to his father, placing a hand on his shoulder. Arthur looked up at his son, his eyes shining with profound pride and love.
Victoria was currently serving a fifty-year sentence in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, her assets completely seized and liquidated to pay reparations to the companies she had defrauded.
The Vance empire was safe, firmly under the control of Mr. Hawthorne and Arthur, waiting for the day Julian would step up to lead.
"Ready for your physical therapy, Dad?" Julian asked.
"Always, my boy," Arthur smiled.

Julian looked around the bright, warm room. The cold perfection of the past was dead. The sterile prison was gone. The chilling symmetry had been replaced by the messy, beautiful reality of a family that had survived the darkness.
Julian took a bite of the warm pastry, savoring the taste of absolute, undeniable freedom.
