Chapter 6 - The Ransom Demand

"Put the gun down, Marcus," Adrian said.
His voice was deadly calm, but his heart was pounding.
Marcus had been his most trusted driver for nearly a decade.
The driver's hands were shaking, but his grip on the weapon remained firm.
"I am sorry, Boss," Marcus whispered.
"Victor has my wife."
"He said if I don't deliver the woman to him, he will kill her."
Adrian frowned in deep confusion.
"Natalie?" he asked.
"He wants Natalie?"
Marcus shook his head slowly.
"No."
He gestured with the barrel of the gun.
"He wants the maid."
Adrian looked at Hannah, whose face had gone completely pale.
Maisie buried her face in her mother's chest, whimpering softly.
Adrian raised his hands slowly, stepping between Marcus and the women.
"Listen to me, Marcus," Adrian reasoned.
"Victor is going to kill your wife anyway."
"He is tying up loose ends."
"If you put the gun down, I will use every resource I have to save her."
Marcus hesitated, a single tear slipping down his cheek.
In that split second of doubt, Hannah moved.
She did not scream or hesitate.
She struck out with her foot, kicking the gun flawlessly out of the driver's hand.
Adrian instantly tackled Marcus to the concrete floor.
He knocked the man unconscious with a single brutal punch.
Adrian stood up, panting heavily.
He looked at the quiet woman wearing a torn maid's uniform.
"Why does Victor Shaw want a housekeeper?" Adrian demanded.
Hannah looked down at her battered sneakers.

She finally looked up, her eyes hard and cold.
"Because I am the one who wrote that ledger," she said.
