Chapter 6 - The Trap

The plan was incredibly dangerous.
Dominic intended to use the fake audio confession to lure Reynolds and his dirty cops to the pier.
I insisted on going with him.
Dominic refused at first, terrified for my safety.
"If Reynolds does not see me, he will know it is a trap," I argued fiercely.
Dominic finally agreed, giving me a Kevlar vest to wear beneath a heavy coat.
We arrived at Pier 44 just after midnight.
The fog rolling off the dark water was thick and freezing.
Dominic's men were hidden inside the empty shipping containers, waiting in total silence.
I stood next to Dominic under a flickering streetlamp.
Ten minutes later, three unmarked police cruisers rolled onto the docks without their headlights on.
Detective Reynolds stepped out of the lead car, holding a shotgun.
He was flanked by eight heavily armed tactical officers.
"It is over, Salvatore!" Reynolds shouted, marching forward.
"We have you on tape confessing to the entire operation."
Dominic did not even flinch.
"You have a tape of me lying to a waitress, Marcus."
Dominic snapped his fingers.
The doors of the shipping containers burst open simultaneously.
Thirty of Dominic's heavily armed enforcers stepped out, trapping the corrupt police in a deadly circle.
Reynolds lowered his shotgun, realizing he had walked directly into an ambush.
But instead of looking panicked, Reynolds began to laugh.
It was a wet, ugly sound that sent shivers down my spine.
"You always think you are the smartest man in the room, Dominic," Reynolds sneered.
"But Pier 44 was never my actual target tonight."
My heart stopped dead in my chest.
"What did you do?" Dominic demanded, his calm facade finally cracking.
Reynolds smiled maliciously at me.
"Did you really think I would send all my men here when the girl's ex-husband is perfectly willing to do my dirty work?"
May you like
Reynolds tossed a burner phone onto the wet pavement.
"Mark just walked into your penthouse five minutes ago."
