Chapter 5 - The Wire

I froze completely, my blood turning to ice.

I forced a stiff smile onto my face for the benefit of the security cameras.

"What do you want?" I asked through gritted teeth.

Reynolds let go of my wrist and slid a small, metallic button across the green felt table.

"This is a high-grade audio transmitter," he sneered quietly.

"Pin it inside your dress and go up to Dominic's private office."

"I want you to ask him about the shipment arriving at Pier 44 tonight."

"If you do not get him to confess on tape, your little girl will not wake up tomorrow morning."

He stood up and walked away, disappearing into the crowd of gamblers.

My hands shook violently as I picked up the tiny microphone.

I pinned it to the inside of my bra, exactly over my racing heart.

I rode the private elevator up to the top floor of the casino.

Dominic was sitting behind a massive mahogany desk, looking over financial reports.

He looked up and his eyes softened slightly when he saw me.

I walked toward his desk.

I didn't speak.

Instead, I grabbed a pen and a notepad from his desk.

I wrote: "I am wearing a wire."

Dominic's eyes flashed with instant, lethal comprehension.

He did not look surprised, only dangerously calm.

He took the pen from my hand.

He wrote: "Who?"

I wrote: "Reynolds. He threatened Lily."

Dominic gently pulled me into his arms.

"Emma, my beautiful girl," Dominic said out loud, projecting his voice for the hidden microphone.

"You asked about the shipment at Pier 44?"

He pressed a kiss to my forehead while writing on the pad.

He wrote: "We are going to give him exactly what he wants."

Dominic spoke loudly again.

"Yes, the illegal shipment is arriving tonight at Pier 44, and I will be there personally to oversee it."

May you like

Dominic smiled at me and wrote one final sentence on the paper.

"Reynolds just signed his own death warrant."
