Chapter 8 - The Poisoned Apple

Being promoted to the boss's personal detail was not a gift.

It was a death sentence disguised as a promotion.

Elena spent the next two days standing silently in the corner of Adrian's master bedroom.

She pretended to organize his books while secretly watching every single person who entered the room.

Dante had privately instructed her to act as his invisible spy.

Because she was just a maid in their eyes, the mafia captains spoke freely in front of her.

On Thursday afternoon, Lorenzo entered the adjacent study to make a private phone call.

Elena quietly pressed her ear against the connecting door to listen.

"The doctor is moving him to the secure private clinic tonight at eight," Lorenzo whispered into his phone.

"The transport van will be heavily armored, but the route through the tunnel is vulnerable."

Elena held her breath, pressing harder against the cold wood.

"Make sure the explosive charge is large enough to take out the entire vehicle."

"I want my brother dead before he reaches the clinic."

Elena pulled away from the door, her heart hammering violently against her ribs.

She had to find Dante and stop the medical transport immediately.

She turned around to run out the main bedroom door.

Lorenzo was standing right behind her.

He had ended the call early and caught her snooping.

A cruel, twisted smile stretched across his handsome face.

"I always hated nosy maids," Lorenzo whispered softly.

Before she could scream for help, he struck her hard across the temple with the heavy handle of his gun.

Elena crumpled to the floor, her vision fading into absolute blackness.

When she finally woke up, her head was pounding with agonizing pain.

She was lying on the damp concrete floor of the mansion's unfinished basement.

The heavy steel door was securely locked from the outside.

She checked her watch in the dim light coming from a small ceiling grate.

It was seven-forty-five in the evening.

The medical transport van was leaving in exactly fifteen minutes, and Adrian was going to burn alive.
