Chapter 1 - The Dog Nobody Could Touch

The first thing Elena Castillo remembered was the smell of lemon polish on her hands.
Not the shouting.
Not the doctor frozen outside the study.
Not even the enormous guard dog standing over an unconscious mafia boss with his teeth showing.
It was lemon polish.
Years later, the sharp citrus scent would still carry Elena back to that October morning in Boston.
It would take her back to the moment her five-year-old daughter walked toward an animal no grown man in the Moretti mansion dared approach.
The crash had come at exactly ten in the morning.
Elena had been three rooms away, folding towels in the upstairs linen closet.
Sophia sat cross-legged beside her with crayons and a cheap notebook.
School was closed.
The babysitter had canceled.
Elena could not afford to miss a shift.
So she had brought her daughter to work with strict instructions to stay beside her.
Those instructions lasted until the crash.
Now Adrian Moretti lay unconscious beside his desk.
A broken crystal glass glittered on the rug.
And Titan stood over him.
The Cane Corso was enormous, nearly one hundred thirty pounds of muscle, instinct, and loyalty.
His gray-black coat caught the sunlight coming through the tall windows.
A scar crossed one shoulder.
His massive head remained lowered while a continuous growl vibrated from his chest.
Dante Russo, head of household security, stood at the doorway with three guards behind him.
Nobody moved.
Doctor Ethan Reynolds stopped twelve feet away.
"I am not going anywhere until somebody controls that dog," Reynolds said.
Dante tightened his jaw.
"Titan!"
The dog lifted his lips, exposing sharp white teeth.
Dante immediately stopped.
"Okay," Dante muttered.
Reynolds stared at Adrian on the floor.
"How long has he been down?"
"Maybe four minutes," Dante replied.
"Then every minute matters."
"I understand that."
"No, Mister Russo, I do not think you do."
Reynolds pointed toward Adrian.
"If this is cardiac, neurological, or internal bleeding, standing in the hallway debating with a dog may kill him."
Elena pressed one hand against her mouth.
Adrian Moretti frightened people.
Even Elena was terrified of the man who owned this estate.
But fear did strange things when someone was lying helplessly on the floor.
For eight months, Elena had cleaned rooms in his mansion without asking questions about the men who came at midnight.
She ignored the black cars that waited outside.
She never listened to the whispered conversations that stopped whenever housekeeping entered a room.
She knew only the rules.
Never enter Adrian's office without permission.
Never touch anything on his desk.
Never ask about visitors.
And never approach Titan.
Especially never approach Titan.
"Mommy?"
Elena froze in terror.
Every adult in the hallway turned around.
Sophia stood twenty feet behind them.
Her pink dress was slightly wrinkled from sitting on the linen-room floor.
Her teddy bear was tucked safely under one arm.
"Sophia," Elena whispered, her voice barely working.
"I told you to stay in the room."
Sophia looked past her mother.
She looked straight at Titan.
"Oh," Sophia said softly.
Elena moved toward her child.
"Come here right now."
But Sophia simply tilted her head.
"Why is he scared?"
Nobody answered her.
Dante frowned deeply.
"Who?"
"Titan is scared," Sophia explained.
"He isn't scared," Dante snapped.
Sophia looked at the large security chief as though he had made an obvious mistake.
"Yes, he is."
Titan growled again, louder this time.
One guard muttered that the beast did not sound scared at all.
Sophia took one step forward.
Elena grabbed her tiny shoulder.
"No, you stay back."
"But Mommy, he needs help."
"No."
Sophia kept her eyes on the massive dog.
"He thinks they are going to hurt his person."
Elena crouched down to her daughter's eye level.
"Sweetheart, listen to me."
"Titan is very upset."
"We need to let the grown-ups handle this."
Sophia glanced at the collection of grown-ups standing helplessly in the hallway.
"But they aren't handling it," she pointed out reasonably.
Under any other circumstances, Elena might have laughed.
Nobody laughed now.
Reynolds checked his gold watch.
"We are running out of time."
Dante looked toward one of his armed men.
"Get the tranquilizer rifle."
"No!"
The word came sharply from Sophia.
Everyone stared at the little girl again.
Sophia hugged her teddy bear tightly against her chest.
"You can't shoot him."
"It would only make him sleep," Dante tried to explain calmly.
"He won't know that," Sophia argued.
Dante looked incredibly exhausted.
"Sophia, right now I need you to listen to your mother."
But Sophia had already noticed something else changing in the room.
Titan's deep growl had changed pitch.
He was looking directly at her.
Elena felt the shift in the air too.
The terrifying dog was no longer watching the armed guards.
He was watching the little girl in the pink dress.
"Sophia," Elena warned, tightening her grip.
Then Titan made a totally unexpected sound.
It was not a growl.
It was a faint, high-pitched whine.
Sophia let her face soften into a smile.
"See?"
Before Elena understood what was happening, Sophia slipped from beneath her trembling hand.
"Sophia!"
The little girl walked confidently through the doorway.
Dante lunged forward to grab her.
Elena instinctively caught his sleeve to pull him back.
"Wait!" Elena cried out.
Nobody dared to breathe.
Sophia stopped six feet from Titan.
The Cane Corso stared down at her.
His heavy muscles remained tight under his dark coat.
His enormous body still shielded the unconscious mafia boss.
Sophia slowly lowered her teddy bear.
"Hi, Titan."
The dog's cropped ears twitched.
Sophia took another step forward.
Elena felt her knees almost give out from sheer panic.
"Baby, please come back."
Sophia glanced back over her shoulder.
"It is okay, Mommy."
"No, it is not okay."
Titan suddenly shifted his weight.
Dante quickly reached inside his jacket for his real gun.
Elena nearly screamed in terror.
But the dog did not charge at the child.
He lowered his massive head.
Sophia slowly extended her small, empty hand.
"Remember me?"
Dante looked at Elena with pure shock.
"What does she mean by that?"
"I do not know," Elena whispered.
Sophia moved even closer.
Titan gently sniffed her tiny fingers.
Then something happened that Elena would remember for the rest of her life.
The vicious growling stopped.
Completely.
Sophia confidently touched Titan between the ears.
The enormous dog closed his eyes and leaned into her touch.
A guard whispered a curse word under his breath.
Sophia stroked Titan's heavy head.
"It is okay, boy, they are just trying to help him."
Titan looked down at Adrian's motionless body.
Then he looked back up at Sophia.
She placed one small hand on his thick leather collar.
"Come here."
The terrifying dog obediently stepped sideways.
Reynolds stared in total disbelief.
"Keep him right there, little girl."
Sophia walked two more steps away from the desk.
Titan followed her like a gentle puppy.
The moment the path opened, Reynolds rushed forward and dropped beside Adrian.
"His pulse is weak."
Reynolds aggressively ripped open his medical bag.
Dante followed the doctor cautiously into the room.
Elena ran straight to Sophia and wrapped both arms tightly around her.
"What were you thinking?" Elena demanded quietly.
Sophia blinked her innocent eyes.
"I was thinking that Titan was scared."
"You could have been hurt."
"But I wasn't hurt."
"That is entirely beside the point."
Sophia looked over Elena's shaking shoulder.
Titan had calmly sat down right beside them.
His body remained positioned firmly between Sophia and the armed guards.
Elena definitely noticed the protective stance.
So did Dante.
Reynolds quickly loosened Adrian's silk tie and collar.
"Dante."
"What is it?"
"I need an ambulance prepared immediately."
"You have the medical suite downstairs."
"I said call an ambulance now."
Dante let his face drop.
"How bad is it?"
"I do not know yet."
Adrian's body suddenly convulsed violently on the expensive rug.
Titan shot to his feet, barking loudly.
Sophia immediately placed both hands against the dog's thick neck.
"Stay."
The dog trembled with anxiety.
But he stayed.
Reynolds worked quickly to stabilize the seizing man.
After several terrifying seconds, Adrian finally went still again.
"He is breathing," Reynolds announced.
Dante exhaled a long breath.
Four men entered the room carrying a medical stretcher.
Titan began to growl again.
Sophia leaned in and whispered to him.
"They are helping."
Again, impossibly, the giant beast listened to the child.
The guards carefully lifted Adrian onto the canvas.
As the stretcher passed them, Adrian's hand hung loosely over the side.
Titan gently touched the pale hand with his wet nose.
Then he began to follow the men out the door.
"Sophia," Elena said firmly.
"We are going back downstairs to the kitchen right now."
Titan stopped walking.
Sophia stopped walking.
Elena tugged gently on her daughter's arm.
"Come on."
Titan turned around and followed Sophia instead of his master.
Dante stepped boldly in front of the dog to block his path.
Titan instantly bared his teeth and growled.
Sophia frowned deeply.
"Titan."
The dog quickly looked at her.
"Do not be rude to Mister Dante."
Silence fell over the hallway.
Then Titan dutifully sat down on the hardwood floor.
One of the guards openly stared at Sophia.
Dante stared even harder.
Elena wanted nothing more than to take her daughter and disappear into the walls.
Instead, Dante asked the dangerous question.
"How exactly does she know him?"
Elena shook her head frantically.
"She doesn't know him at all."
"That dog does not behave like that with strangers."
"She has seen him around the house a few times."
"That isn't what I asked you, Elena."
Sophia tugged on Elena's uniform sleeve.
"Mommy?"
"Yes?"
"I gave him cookies."
Elena closed her eyes in pure defeat.
"What did you say?"
"Not people cookies, I gave him dog cookies."
"When did you do that?"
Sophia counted silently on her little fingers.
"When Mrs. Bellini watches me after school sometimes."
Elena stared at her sweet daughter in horror.
Mrs. Bellini.
Of course it was her.
The elderly housekeeper spoiled every single creature inside the mansion, including the dangerous ones.
"How many times did you feed him?"
Sophia simply shrugged.
"Lots of times."
Dante slowly crouched down to look at the girl.
"You have actually touched Titan before today?"
Sophia nodded her head happily.
"He really likes being scratched behind his ears."
Dante looked cautiously at the dog.
Titan looked right back at him with cold eyes.
For the first time, Elena saw something other than suspicion on Dante Russo's harsh face.
She saw genuine confusion.
Then Dante's encrypted phone rang loudly.
He answered it and pressed it to his ear.
His expression instantly hardened into stone.
"What?"
A long pause stretched through the hallway.
"Lock the entire property down right now."
Elena's stomach twisted into a tight knot.
Dante stood back up to his full height.
"What happened?" Elena asked nervously.
He did not answer her immediately.
"Dante, please."
He looked toward the broken crystal glass inside Adrian's abandoned study.
Then he looked toward the corridor where Reynolds had disappeared with Adrian.
Finally, he lowered his voice so the guards could not hear.
"My security team just found something in Mister Moretti's water pitcher."
Elena stared at him, feeling the blood drain from her face.
"What kind of something?"
"We do not know what it is yet."
Sophia hugged her teddy bear a little tighter.
Titan aggressively moved an inch closer to the child, placing himself slightly in front of her.
Dante dropped his heavy gaze down to Sophia.
Then he said the words that changed their lives forever.
"Mister Moretti did not collapse naturally."
Elena felt freezing cold despite the bright sunlight pouring through the tall windows.
Someone had actively tried to kill Adrian Moretti.
Someone who lived inside this very mansion.
May you like
And her innocent five-year-old daughter had just become the only person capable of controlling the one loyal witness who had been in the room.
Titan let out a low rumble in his chest, staring directly at the cleaning cart Elena had left in the hallway.
