Chapter 10 - The Light Returns

Grant lowered his stolen weapon immediately, refusing to let Hannah and Lucy die for his vengeance.
"Smart choice," Dr. Hale sneered, keeping the five-dollar flashlight pointed directly at Grant's face.
But Hale made one fatal mistake in his moment of absolute arrogance.
The cheap yellow flashlight was the exact same one little Lucy had used on the terrace.
Lucy, recognizing her favorite toy, wiggled her small arm free from Hannah’s grip and smacked the flashlight hard.
The plastic toy shattered against the floor, instantly killing the light and throwing the room back into total darkness.
Grant did not hesitate for a fraction of a second.
He lunged forward through the shadows, tackling Dr. Hale to the ground with devastating force.
The doctor’s gun fired wildly into the heavy mahogany desk before Grant knocked him completely unconscious with a brutal punch.
Before Thomas could even react in the dark, Grant spun around and pressed the barrel of his gun directly against his brother’s chest.
"It is over, Thomas," Grant whispered coldly.
Within an hour, Grant’s loyal guards, who had survived the explosion, arrested Thomas, Daniel, and the corrupt doctor.
Grant immediately dispatched his most trusted strike team to the Brooklyn warehouse coordinates he had beaten out of Daniel.
By sunrise, the heavy doors of the mansion’s grand foyer swung open.
A beautiful, terrified nine-year-old girl walked slowly into the light.
"Emma," Grant cried out, dropping to his knees on the marble floor.
His vision was still incredibly blurry, but he could perfectly see the bright, vibrant colors of his daughter's dress.
Emma ran into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably as five years of nightmare finally came to an end.
Grant held her tightly, surrounded by the quiet strength of Hannah and the innocent joy of little Lucy.
His sight was returning, his daughter was finally home, and he had found a new family in the woman who had saved him.
For the first time in five years, Grant Mercer’s world was beautifully, blindingly bright.
A week later, as Grant and Emma were playing happily on the sunlit terrace, Hannah walked out holding a torn envelope.
Her hands were shaking violently as she handed the letter to Grant.

Grant opened it and read the messy, handwritten scrawl signed by her missing husband, Arthur.
"I kept Emma safe from Thomas for five years, but now the Serpents know I am alive. They are coming to the mansion tonight to take Lucy in exchange for my debts."
