Chapter 4 - The Traitor's Hand

Elena slapped her hand over her own mouth to stifle a gasp of pure horror.

Marco finished emptying the last blue vial and threw the glass across the room.

He pulled a two-way radio from his tactical vest and pressed the transmission button.

"The antidotes are destroyed," Marco said coldly.

"Move upstairs and finish Moretti, but make sure you secure the little girl unharmed."

Elena's blood ran entirely cold in her veins.

They were not just here to kill Adrian.

They were here for Sophia.

Panic threatened to blind her, but Elena forced herself to focus on the empty glass vials on the floor.

She remembered cleaning the doctor's office yesterday and seeing him place a backup supply in a hidden wall safe.

Marco did not know about the hidden safe behind the anatomical poster.

Elena waited until Marco turned his back to check the hallway.

She slipped silently out of the secret passage and crept across the tiled floor.

Her rubber-soled shoes made absolutely no sound as she reached the poster.

She gently peeled it back and entered the four-digit code the doctor had carelessly left on a sticky note last week.

The small safe clicked open, revealing one final blue vial of the neurotoxin antidote.

Elena snatched it quickly and turned to run back toward the hidden door.

Her elbow brushed against a metal surgical tray, sending it clattering loudly to the floor.

Marco spun around instantly, raising his silenced pistol right at her chest.

"Well, look what we have here," the traitor smiled, his eyes completely dead.

"Hand over the vial, Maria, or whatever your fake name is."

Elena froze, clutching the tiny glass bottle to her chest.

He knew she was using a fake name.

Before Marco could pull the trigger, a massive black blur exploded through the doorway.

Titan had followed her scent down the secret stairs.

The dog slammed into Marco's chest with the force of a freight train, crushing the man's ribs instantly.

The gun fired wildly into the ceiling as Marco screamed in agony.

Elena did not wait to see the outcome of the struggle.

She turned and sprinted up the dark stairs toward the study, praying she wasn't too late.

She burst through the tapestry on the second floor, gasping for air.

But the hallway was empty, the guards were dead, and Sophia was completely gone.
