Chapter 9 - The Ghost Returns

The silence in the grand foyer was absolute, heavy with the weight of impossibility.

Sophie stared at the man standing in the doorway, her mind violently rejecting what her eyes were seeing.

He was the spitting image of Luca, sharing the same sharp jawline, the same dark, sweeping hair, and the same terrifyingly calm posture.

But the cruel smirk playing on his lips was entirely his own.

It was Matteo Moretti.

The brother who was supposed to be a skeleton locked in a shipping container for fifteen years.

Mrs. Moretti let out a sound that was half gasp, half sob.

She clutched the marble railing of the staircase, her knuckles turning completely white.

“Matteo,” she whispered, her voice trembling with absolute terror.

“You’re… you’re dead.”

Matteo laughed, a dry, echoing sound that filled the massive entrance hall.

He slowly walked forward, ignoring the five heavily armed loyalist guards who had their weapons aimed directly at his chest.

“I was dead for about three hours, Mother,” Matteo replied casually, checking his expensive gold cufflink.

“Until the coroner our family paid realized my heart was barely beating from your incredibly clumsy attempt at poisoning me.”

Luca stepped in front of his mother, his face a mask of cold, controlled fury.

He didn't reach for his gun.

He knew if Matteo was walking through the front door of a heavily guarded estate, he hadn't come alone.

“If you survived, who is in the blue container?” Luca demanded.

Matteo stopped at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at his older brother with pure hatred.

“That would be the corrupt coroner, Luca.”

“I woke up on his slab, drove a scalpel through his neck, and left him in the box father intended for me.”

“I spent the last fifteen years building my own empire in Europe, waiting for the perfect time to come back and claim what is rightfully mine.”

Sophie backed away slowly, pressing her uninjured shoulder against the cool marble wall.

She realized Vanessa had never been the mastermind.

Vanessa had been taking orders from Matteo the entire time, destabilizing the family from the inside to prepare for his return.

“You sent Dominic to the pier tonight,” Luca stated, his mind rapidly connecting the pieces.

“You leaked the location of the container to the Rossi family.”

Matteo grinned, a terrifying expression of absolute triumph.

“I needed Dominic to eliminate you, and I needed you to eliminate Dominic.”

“It was a beautifully simple way to clear the board of my two biggest obstacles.”

Matteo raised his hand and snapped his fingers.

The heavy mahogany doors of the mansion burst open.

Dozens of heavily armed mercenaries flooded into the foyer.

They weren't local syndicate thugs.

They were professional, European paramilitary contractors, equipped with military-grade tactical gear.

Luca’s loyalist guards were instantly outnumbered five to one.

They lowered their weapons, realizing a firefight in the enclosed space would be absolute suicide.

Matteo walked up the first three steps of the grand staircase, standing eye to eye with his older brother.

“The commission already knows I am alive, Luca,” Matteo said smoothly.

“And they know Mother tried to murder me to protect you.”

“They have officially stripped you of all territory and handed the Moretti empire entirely to me.”

Luca didn't flinch.

He stood his ground, a king watching his castle burn.

Matteo turned his gaze toward Sophie, who was trying desperately to blend into the shadows near the wall.

He studied the bruises on her neck and the torn fabric of her maid uniform.

“And who is this?” Matteo asked, his eyes darkening with cruel interest.

“The brave little servant who ruined my perfectly planned coup?”

Matteo gestured to two of his massive mercenaries.

“Take the maid and my mother down to the wine cellar.”

“I want them executed quietly.”

Sophie’s heart completely stopped.

She looked at Luca, praying the fearless mafia boss had one last trick hidden up his tailored sleeve.

But Luca just looked at her, his dark eyes filled with absolute, profound apology.

He slowly raised his hands and surrendered his weapon to his brother.
