Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

Dominic’s screams echoed wildly across the dark, rain-swept pier.

He writhed in the mud, clutching his shattered leg beneath the massive iron crane hook.

Luca snapped out of his paralyzed state instantly.

The mafia boss re-emerged, cold and efficient.

He sprinted forward, kicking Dominic’s dropped pistol into the dark water of the harbor.

He placed his heavy boot directly onto Dominic’s uninjured leg, pinning the rival boss to the ground.

“Tell your sniper to stand down, or I will crush the other one,” Luca commanded.

Dominic screamed into a small radio clipped to his lapel, ordering his hidden shooter to retreat.

Sophie stood completely frozen, the smoking gun still gripped tightly in her shaking hands.

She couldn't believe she had actually fired the weapon.

Her ears rang loudly, and the smell of gunpowder burned her nose.

Vanessa saw her opportunity in the chaos.

The treacherous housekeeper slowly backed away, intending to slip into the shadows and disappear forever.

But Luca had not forgotten about the woman who started this entire nightmare.

Without looking away from Dominic, Luca raised his hand and snapped his fingers.

From the darkness between the shipping containers, four heavily armed Moretti loyalists stepped out into the light.

They had arrived quietly during the confrontation, called in by Luca’s emergency text message from the cellar.

They immediately surrounded Vanessa, raising their assault rifles.

Vanessa dropped her weapon and raised her hands, finally accepting her absolute defeat.

Luca ordered his men to secure Dominic and throw Vanessa into the back of an armored transport van.

He turned his attention back to his mother, who was still kneeling in the wet gravel, weeping silently.

He pulled a small pocket knife and cut the plastic zip ties binding her wrists.

He gently helped the frail woman to her feet.

He didn't yell.

He didn't demand explanations.

He simply wrapped his suit jacket around her shivering shoulders.

“We will deal with the past tomorrow, Mother,” Luca said softly.

“Tonight, we go home.”

He signaled to his men to clean up the pier and secure the blue shipping container.

Luca walked over to where Sophie was standing.

He gently placed his hand over hers and slowly pushed the barrel of the gun toward the ground.

He took the weapon from her trembling fingers and tucked it into his waistband.

“You saved my life tonight, Sophie,” Luca said, his dark eyes filled with genuine gratitude.

“And you saved my mother’s.”

Sophie nodded weakly, the adrenaline finally leaving her body in a rush.

Her injured shoulder throbbed violently, and her knees felt like water.

“I just want to go home,” Sophie whispered, shivering uncontrollably in her torn, soaked uniform.

Luca escorted them back to the black SUV he had parked down the street.

The drive back to the estate was suffocatingly quiet.

Mrs. Moretti stared blankly out the window, lost in the horrifying memories of fifteen years ago.

Sophie watched the city lights blur together through the rain-streaked glass.

They arrived at the Moretti mansion just as the sun began to rise, casting a pale, gray light over the sprawling estate.

The grand gala was over.

The guests had long since departed, completely unaware of the war that had raged beneath their feet.

Loyal guards patrolled the perimeter, securing the grounds.

Luca led Sophie into the grand foyer and called for the estate's private doctor to tend to her shoulder.

He promised her that she would never have to scrub another floor or carry another laundry basket again.

He swore she would be protected and financially secure for the rest of her life.

Sophie smiled, feeling a profound sense of relief wash over her.

The nightmare was finally over.

She turned to walk toward the staff quarters to change out of her ruined uniform.

As she reached the bottom of the grand staircase, she heard a quiet, chilling sound.

The front doors of the mansion slowly clicked open.

A man stepped into the grand foyer, completely ignoring the armed guards who stood frozen in terror.

He was wearing a tailored suit, entirely dry despite the storm outside.

He looked exactly like Luca, only younger, with a cruel, mocking smile spreading across his face.

“Hello, Mother,” Matteo Moretti said smoothly.

“I hope you haven't forgotten how to make my favorite poison.”
