Chapter 2 - The Ambush

The cold steel of the detective's gun remained perfectly steady, aimed directly at Nathan's heart.

Nathan slowly raised his hands, his mind calculating every possible angle of escape in the confined space.

He knew Victoria’s corrupt uncle would gladly pull the trigger and claim self-defense.

"You cannot honestly believe a judge will let you get away with this," Nathan stated firmly.

The detective laughed, a harsh and grating sound that echoed loudly through the foyer.

"Victoria already bought the judge, the jury, and the entire precinct."

Grace sobbed quietly behind Nathan, wrapping her arms completely around Lily to shield her from the weapons.

Nathan realized he could not win a physical fight against six heavily armed tactical officers.

He slowly backed away, subtly pressing his heel against a hidden security panel built into the baseboard.

It was an emergency panic switch his paranoid father had installed years ago to protect the estate.

A deafening alarm suddenly shrieked through the mansion, completely disorienting the corrupt police officers.

Massive steel security shutters immediately slammed down over all the windows and exterior doors.

The house was instantly plunged into absolute darkness, illuminated only by the flashing red emergency lights.

"Grab them!" the detective screamed frantically, blindly firing a single shot into the ceiling.

Nathan grabbed Grace's hand and hoisted Lily into his other arm, sprinting down the darkened hallway.

They rushed into his private study and quickly locked the heavy reinforced mahogany door behind them.

"We have to get out of the country before they breach that door," Nathan told Grace breathlessly.

He pulled out his encrypted laptop and rapidly logged into his offshore banking accounts.

He needed to wire his emergency funds to a secure, untraceable shell corporation.

The digital loading screen spun for a few agonizing seconds before displaying his total account balance.

Nathan stared at the screen, his blood running completely cold.

His massive billionaire fortune was entirely gone.

The glowing red numbers on the screen confirmed his account balance was absolutely zero.
