Chapter 10 - The Queen of Ashes

A month passed. The winter gave way to a cold, bitter spring.

Vanguard Manor stood as majestic and unyielding as ever. The massive diamond-cut chandeliers still cast their warm, amber glow across the ivory terrazzo floors. The metropolis moved on, ignorant of the blood spilled to maintain the balance of power.

Vivienne stood in the grand reception hall, dressed in a sweeping black velvet gown. The heavy rubies rested against her throat, cold and sharp.

Tonight was another gala. Another display of engineered luxury.

The room was filled with the same diplomats, lawmakers, and corporate barons. They drank her champagne. They laughed at her perfectly choreographed jokes. They bowed to her absolute, terrifying authority.

But as Vivienne looked around the room, the reality of her empire settled heavily on her shoulders.

Arthur was in a concrete cell. Marcus was dead. Julian was ashes at the bottom of the Atlantic. Elena was a ghost living in Paris, paid to forget her own name.

Vivienne had won the silent war. She had protected her gilded prison from every threat. But in doing so, she had eradicated anyone who ever dared to stand close to her.

She was the undisputed sovereign, but she was entirely, utterly alone.

A young, ambitious tech billionaire approached her, offering a nervous, fawning smile. "Ms. Vanguard, it is an honor. Your resilience this past quarter has been nothing short of legendary."

Vivienne smiled her polite, artificial smile. She wielded her status like a blade, cutting through the pleasantries.

"Survival is merely a matter of mathematics," Vivienne said smoothly, her piercing gaze betraying nothing.

To Vivienne, the crowd pressing in around her were neither allies nor equals. They were not friends, and they were certainly not peers.

They were simply spectators, gathered in the dark, watching the lonely queen rule over her empire of glass and ash.
