Chapter 1 - The Phantom in the Crowd

The amber light of Vanguard Manor cast long, deceptive shadows across the terrazzo floor, but Vivienne’s vision was crystalline. She navigated the sea of sycophants with the grace of an apex predator, her midnight-blue silk gown whispering against the marble. She nodded at a senator, offered a fleeting, manufactured smile to a tech billionaire, and kept her fingers delicately wrapped around a crystal flute of vintage Dom Pérignon.

Then, the heavy mahogany doors of the grand hall swung open, and the temperature in the room seemingly plummeted.

The string quartet missed a single note—a minor imperfection, but to Vivienne, it was as loud as a siren. She turned her head, the icy rubies at her throat catching the light like freshly spilled blood.

Standing in the entryway was Julian Thorne.

Julian was a corporate raider, a man who dismantled legacy companies and sold them for parts. He was ruthless, arrogant, and the only man in the metropolis who possessed a fortune that rivaled her own. But it wasn't Julian who made Vivienne’s breath catch in her throat.

It was the woman on his arm.

She was young, perhaps twenty-two, dressed in a simple, unadorned silver slip dress that bordered on insulting for a winter gala. But resting against her collarbone was a piece of jewelry that made Vivienne’s blood run cold. It was the Vanguard Tear—a fifty-carat, teardrop-shaped blue diamond that had belonged to Vivienne’s late mother. The diamond was supposed to be locked in a biometric vault beneath the Manor.

Julian’s eyes locked onto Vivienne’s across the crowded room. He didn't just smile; he bared his teeth. He began to guide the young woman through the crowd, parting the billionaires like Moses at the Red Sea, making a direct line for the queen of the glass cage.

"Vivienne, darling," Julian purred as he stopped before her. He looked her up and down, his gaze lingering on her rubies. "You look formidable tonight. As always."

"And you look like a man who has lost his invitation, Julian," Vivienne replied, her voice smooth and devoid of any tremor. "Security is usually so thorough. I must have someone fired in the morning."

"Oh, I didn't need an invitation," Julian said, his eyes glittering with malicious intent. He gently pulled the young woman forward. She looked terrified, her eyes darting around the opulent room. "I'm just the plus-one tonight. Vivienne, allow me to introduce Elena. Elena... Vanguard."

The silence that stretched between them was absolute. To the surrounding guests, it looked like a polite exchange between titans. But Vivienne knew exactly what this was. It was a declaration of war.
