Chapter 5 - Blood and Betrayal

The entire room started spinning as the impossible words echoed through my terrified mind.
A dead woman had supposedly just paid a team of professional assassins to murder me in a busy restaurant.
Luca violently grabbed the tablet from his guard, his knuckles turning entirely white as he read the encrypted data.
“Lock down the entire estate immediately,” Luca ordered, throwing the expensive device violently against the stone fireplace.
The security chief nodded sharply and sprinted out of the room to execute the defensive protocols.
Heavy steel shutters began sliding down over the massive windows, plunging the house into a suffocating darkness.
Luca turned slowly to face me, his expression darker and more terrifying than anything I had ever seen.
“Are you playing a sick game with me, Avery?” he growled, backing me up against the heavy wooden desk.
“I swear to God I have absolutely no idea what is going on!” I cried out, tears of frustration spilling down my cheeks.
He trapped me against the edge of the desk, placing his strong arms on either side of my trembling body.
His handsome face was inches from mine, and I could feel the furious heat radiating from his broad chest.
“If you are lying to me, I will destroy you,” he whispered, his eyes searching mine for any sign of deception.
“I am just a broke waitress who couldn't even pay her rent this morning!” I shouted back, finally finding my courage.
Luca stared at me for a long, agonizing moment before the fierce anger in his eyes slowly shifted into something else.
It was pure desire, raw and completely untamed, burning right through the thick walls of his legendary self-control.
He leaned in closer, his warm lips hovering barely a millimeter away from mine.
I stopped breathing, my body completely betraying my common sense as I helplessly tilted my chin up toward him.
Just as his mouth finally brushed against mine, the lights in the entire mansion suddenly flickered and died.
The backup generators completely failed to engage, leaving us in absolute, pitch-black silence.
Then, the intercom system on the desk crackled to life with a burst of harsh static.

A distorted, metallic voice echoed through the dark study.
“We are already inside the house, Luca, and we are coming right now to collect the fake mother.”
