Chapter 7 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Dozens of modified cars roared onto the bridge, completely boxing in Victor’s armored medical van.

Blinding headlights cut through the heavy rain, disorienting Victor and his remaining guards.

Julian seized the split-second distraction and viciously punched Victor in the throat.

Victor gagged and dropped his suppressed pistol onto the floorboard.

Julian kicked the car door open, dragging Elena out into the chaotic, rain-swept battleground.

Street racers were throwing smoke grenades and fighting the heavily armed mercenaries with crowbars and chains.

Julian sprinted through the thick colored smoke, heading straight for the armored medical van.

He shattered the back window with his elbow and reached inside to unlock the heavy steel doors.

He ripped the doors open and found Leo strapped to a gurney, looking pale but unharmed.

Two terrified black-market surgeons backed away with their hands raised in absolute surrender.

Julian unstrapped his weeping son and pulled him tightly into his chest, kissing his forehead repeatedly.

Elena climbed into the back of the van, sobbing hysterically as she hugged her child for the first time since the football field.

For a brief, beautiful moment, Julian felt like he had actually won the war.

He turned around to guide his family out of the van and toward a waiting getaway car.

He froze when he saw his oldest street-racer friend, the man who had just saved them, standing by the doors.

The friend was pointing a massive shotgun directly at Julian's chest.

Julian asked him in a broken whisper why he was doing this after fighting so hard to get here.

The friend looked down with deep shame, stating that Victor had just wired ten million dollars to his offshore account.

He cocked the shotgun, apologizing quietly as he prepared to pull the trigger.

Before he could fire, Elena lunged forward with a surgical scalpel she had grabbed from the tray.

She drove the blade deep into the friend's shoulder, causing him to misfire into the metal roof of the van.

Julian tackled the wounded man out of the doors, sending them both tumbling onto the wet asphalt.

Julian hit the ground hard, his vision blurring as a fresh wave of pain shot through his ribs.

He looked up to see a heavily bruised Victor stepping out of the smoke, holding a detonator switch.

Victor smiled a bloody smile and pressed the red button with his thumb.
