Chapter 9 - The Virus

Arthur froze, completely distracted by the blaring alarms echoing through the corporate tower.

“What did you do?” he screamed, turning his gun back toward Lily.

Lily smiled, a triumphant and ruthless expression that made her look exactly like me.

“While you were busy monologuing, I wasn’t just downloading the decryption key,” Lily stated proudly.

“I uploaded a massive cyber-virus directly into Thorne’s central banking mainframe.”

Arthur pulled out his phone frantically, his face turning entirely pale as he read the notifications.

“You are currently draining every single offshore account you own,” Lily explained casually.

“The money is being anonymously donated to hundreds of international charities as we speak.”

Arthur roared in absolute fury, raising his hand to strike her across the face.

I used his moment of distraction to kick the heavy server cart next to me directly into the power conduit.

A massive electrical surge blew out the security systems, forcing the metal gate between us to rise open.

I sprinted forward, tackling Arthur to the ground before he could hurt her.

The armed guards raised their weapons, but the building’s automated lockdown sequence engaged.

Heavy blast doors slammed down over the exits, trapping the guards outside the immediate server room.

I punched Arthur brutally in the jaw, knocking him completely unconscious on the glass floor.

Lily quickly retrieved the encrypted hard drive containing all the evidence of his illegal weapons trade.

“The police are going to breach this building in less than five minutes,” she warned, looking at the security feeds.

“Then it is time to let the authorities clean up this mess,” I said, adjusting my torn jacket.

We stepped over Arthur’s unconscious body and used an emergency maintenance shaft to escape to the roof.

As the sounds of police sirens filled the chaotic city streets below, I finally allowed myself to breathe.

I looked at the incredible young woman standing next to me, feeling a profound sense of pride.

“You did beautifully today, Lily,” I told her sincerely.

She smiled softly, her fingers tracing the silver pendant around her neck.

“We make a pretty good team, Dad,” she replied, saying the word for the very first time.
