Chapter 2 - The Sizzling Carpet

By Wednesday afternoon, Grayhaven House felt like a loaded revolver waiting for a trigger pull.

Mara unpacked their few belongings into the luxurious second-floor bedroom.

It was larger than any apartment she had ever rented in Baltimore.

Soft velvet drapes hung from tall arched windows, and the bed was dressed in Egyptian cotton.

Yet Mara could not shake the suffocating dread settling in her stomach.

She knew how the mafia operated.

Kindness from a wolf was never free; it was merely a temporary delay before the slaughter.

Downstairs in the master suite, Lila sat on a leather footstool beside Damian’s armchair.

She was hugging Barnaby, her threadbare cloth rabbit with one missing ear.

Damian sat wrapped in a heavy wool robe, holding a leather-bound ledger.

His color had improved slightly, the gray pallor of his skin giving way to faint warmth.

Whenever a sharp spasm seized his chest, Lila would quietly walk over and lay her palm against his heart.

Within seconds, the rhythm of his breathing would stabilize as if her touch acted as a human defibrillator.

"She doesn't talk much, does she?" Damian asked quietly, his deep voice softened in a way his associates would never recognize.

"She has profound sensorineural hearing loss, Mr. Volkov," Mara answered softly from the corner of the room.

"She communicates through basic sign language and touch.

Doctors said she needed an advanced cochlear implant, but the surgery costs sixty thousand dollars.

I could work for three lifetimes and never save that much."

Damian didn't respond, but his dark eyes lingered on the girl’s worn-out pink hearing aid.

At four o'clock, the pantry door clicked open.

Dr. Jonathan Sterling, the syndicate’s private physician, stepped into the room carrying a silver tray.

Upon the tray sat a crystal glass of pure mountain water and a small glass vial containing clear medicine.

"Time for your daily heart tincture, Damian," Dr. Sterling said smoothly, offering a polite smile to Mara.

"This is the new compound imported from Zurich.

It should regulate the erratic arrhythmias."

Dr. Sterling poured the vial into the water and handed the glass to Damian.

Damian reached out to take it, his fingers brushing against the cold crystal.

Suddenly, Lila sprang from her footstool like a startled doe.

She threw herself between Damian’s knees and struck his forearm with all her tiny strength.

The crystal glass slipped from his fingers and shattered against the antique Persian rug.

Dr. Sterling gasped in irritation, his face tightening into an ugly scowl.

"Control your child, woman!" the doctor hissed sharply.

"That medicine cost twelve thousand dollars to synthesize!"

Mara rushed forward, apologizing profusely as she dropped to wipe the mess.

"Stop!" Damian’s voice echoed across the master suite like a gunshot.

Mara froze in place, her hand inches from the wet fabric.

The spilled clear liquid was not soaking innocently into the wool fibers.

It was bubbling with a faint, acidic hiss, dissolving the intricate threads of the priceless rug into sticky black slime.
