Chapter 10 - A King’s New Dawn

Three months later, the morning sun rose warm and golden over the manicured lawns of Grayhaven House.
The scars of the violent siege had been erased completely by master craftsmen.
The broken walls were repaired with polished Italian marble, and fresh silk tapestries hung in the grand corridors.
Viktor Vance and his conspirators had disappeared entirely from Baltimore, their names wiped clean from the city's ledgers forever.
Damian Volkov stood on the sunlit terrace, wearing a tailored three-piece charcoal suit.
He held a cup of black coffee in one hand, completely free of any tremors or weakness.
The antidote secured from the loyalist council physicians had cleared the remaining neurotoxin from his system.
He was stronger, sharper, and more formidable than he had ever been in his entire life.
Down on the green lawn, Lila was running through the sprinklers, wearing brand-new red sneakers and laughing with pure joy.
Behind her right ear rested an ultra-thin, state-of-the-art cochlear implant processor.
The top pediatric neurosurgeons in the United States had performed the delicate surgery six weeks ago at Johns Hopkins.
Every cent of the three-hundred-thousand-dollar medical bill had been paid directly from Damian’s private personal accounts.
Mara stepped onto the terrace carrying a tray of fresh pastries, wearing an elegant cream-colored summer dress.
She was no longer the frightened maid hiding in the damp basement scullery.
She was now the executive director of the Volkov Family Foundation, managing millions of dollars dedicated to pediatric clinics and underprivileged children across Maryland.
"Lila passed her speech therapy evaluation this morning," Mara said, her eyes shining with tears of profound gratitude.
"The therapist said she will be able to speak full sentences by Christmas."
Damian looked down at the little girl, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his lips.
"She doesn't need words to make herself heard," Damian said softly.
Lila looked up at the terrace, waved her cloth rabbit enthusiastically, and ran up the stone steps.
She threw her little arms around Damian’s leg, hugging him with all her might.
Damian bent down, scooped her up into his arms without an ounce of strain, and let her rest against his broad chest.
Lila tapped his chest twice, then tapped her own chest twice.
Thump. Thump.
The beat beneath his ribs was strong, steady, and invincible.
Damian kissed the top of her braided hair, knowing that peace had finally returned to his home and his family was safe forever.
An hour later, Andrei entered the private study and placed a sealed steel dispatch box onto Damian’s desk.
The box had been recovered from Viktor’s secret offshore safe in the Cayman Islands.
Damian opened the heavy latch, pulling out a sealed leather folder containing private surveillance photos and an old birth certificate.
As Damian flipped open the yellowed parchment, his blood turned into pure ice.
Staring back at him was a faded photograph of Mara’s late husband, dressed in the dark ceremonial uniform of the legendary Romanov cartel of Moscow.

Stapled beneath the picture was an official DNA registry confirming that Lila’s true biological grandfather was Nikolai Romanov, the deadliest syndicate emperor in Eastern Europe.
Written across the bottom of the document in fresh black ink were seven chilling words: Find my granddaughter, or burn Baltimore to ashes.
