Chapter 9

PART 9: The Night Michael Died

The voice faded.
Static filled the vault.
Then...
Silence.
Lily slowly turned toward Samuel.
"Tell us the truth."
Samuel's shoulders slumped.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Finally, he pulled an old wooden chair into the center of the room and sat down.
"I've carried this for twenty-five years."
His hands trembled.
"Every single day."
Noah folded his arms.
"Were you one of the people who betrayed our father?"
Samuel closed his eyes.
"No."
"I betrayed him..."
"...by surviving."
Neither Lily nor Noah spoke.
Samuel reached into his jacket and removed a faded photograph.
It showed him standing beside Michael in front of the lighthouse.
Both men were smiling.
Both looked fearless.
"We weren't just journalists."
"We investigated corruption together."
"Your father was the bravest man I'd ever known."
Samuel's voice cracked.
"The investigation uncovered something far bigger than we expected."
"Government officials."
"Judges."
"Police commanders."
"Business leaders."
"They were laundering millions through fake charities."
Lily glanced around the vault.
"So that's what all these files are."
Samuel nodded.
"Michael planned to publish everything."
"He knew it would destroy powerful people."
Noah asked quietly,
"So what happened that night?"
Samuel stared at the floor.
"October 18th..."
"...was supposed to be the end."
"The story was finished."
"The evidence was complete."
"We agreed to meet here before dawn."
His breathing became uneven.
"But I never arrived."
"Why?" Lily asked.
Samuel slowly rolled up his left sleeve.
A long scar stretched from his wrist to his elbow.
"I was kidnapped."
"They stopped my car."
"I woke up two days later in a hospital hundreds of miles away."
"They wanted to know where Michael had hidden the evidence."
"I never told them."
Tears filled Samuel's eyes.
"But while they had me..."
"...Michael was alone."
Noah clenched his fists.
"He came here anyway."
Samuel nodded.
"He knew I wasn't coming."
"He also knew why."
"So he made one final decision."
Samuel opened another box.
Inside was a small cassette tape labeled:
6:42 A.M. — October 18
"I've never listened to it."
"He left instructions."
"He said only you should hear it."
Noah picked up the recorder.
His thumb hovered over the play button.
Lily took a deep breath.
"Do it."
The tape clicked.
Static crackled.
Then Michael's calm voice filled the vault.
"Samuel..."
"If you're hearing this, they found you first."
A long pause.
"That means I don't have much time."
His breathing sounded hurried.
In the background...
A car door slammed.
Someone shouted.
Michael continued anyway.
"Lily."
"Noah."
"If you grow up hearing people call me a hero..."
"Don't believe them."
"I was just a father trying to make sure his children could grow up in an honest world."
Noah wiped away a tear.
The tape continued.
"They're here."
The sound of footsteps echoed.
Metal clanged.
A dog barked in the distance.
Michael whispered one final sentence.
"Remember one name..."
Static burst through the speaker.
The tape skipped.
Then stopped.
Lily stared at the recorder.
"No..."
She pressed play again.
Nothing.
The last word had been destroyed.
The only clue their father had managed to leave...
Had disappeared forever.
Then Samuel noticed something lying beneath the recorder.
A folded piece of paper had been taped underneath.
He carefully peeled it away.
Across the front, in Michael's handwriting, were six chilling words.
"If the tape fails... trust Eleanor Beaumont."
Lily frowned.
"Eleanor?"
"She never mentioned any of this."
Samuel slowly unfolded the paper.
Inside was a hand-drawn map.
It led away from the lighthouse...
May you like
...to a place none of them expected. At the bottom, Michael had written one final instruction.
"Everything truly began beneath Eleanor's bakery."
