Chapter 7

PART 7: The Man Who Never Stopped Waiting
The lighthouse stood alone against the crashing waves.
Its white paint had long faded.
The windows were weathered.
The path leading to it was almost hidden beneath wild grass.
Lily parked the car.
Neither she nor Noah spoke.
For twenty-five years, someone had supposedly been waiting here.
It sounded impossible.
Yet Eleanor had never lied to them.
They climbed the narrow stone steps.
At the top, they found a small wooden door.
Noah knocked.
Nothing.
He knocked again.
Footsteps echoed from inside.
Slow.
Careful.
The door creaked open.
An elderly man stood before them.
He looked to be in his late seventies.
Silver hair.
Kind blue eyes.
A weathered face marked by time.
But the moment he saw Noah...
The color drained from his face.
His walking cane slipped from his hand.
"No..."
His voice cracked.
"It can't be..."
Tears filled his eyes.
"You have Michael's eyes."
Lily's heart skipped a beat.
"You knew our father?"
The old man nodded slowly.
"I was his partner."
"My name is Samuel Brooks."
"He saved my life."
Samuel stepped aside.
"I've been waiting for you."
The lighthouse was nothing like they expected.
Inside were shelves filled with neatly labeled boxes.
Photographs.
Newspapers.
Audio tapes.
Hard drives.
Hundreds of journals.
An entire lifetime preserved in silence.
Samuel carefully opened one box.
Inside lay dozens of photographs.
Michael laughing with a pregnant woman.
Michael building a crib.
Michael painting a tiny bedroom.
Michael holding two miniature baby blankets.
Noah could barely breathe.
"He knew about us..."
Samuel smiled through tears.
"He talked about you every single day."
"He already had names picked out."
Lily covered her mouth.
"Our names?"
Samuel nodded.
"He chose them."
Lily felt her knees weaken.
For years, she had believed their mother named them alone.
Now she learned their father had whispered those names long before they were born.
Samuel opened another box.
Inside rested an old video camera.
"I think you're ready to see this."
He inserted a tape into an aging television.
Static filled the screen.
Then an image appeared.
A young Michael smiled into the camera.
He looked exactly like Noah.
The room fell silent.
Michael laughed nervously.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then I probably didn't make it home."
Lily began crying before he spoke another word.
Michael looked directly into the camera.
"I don't know if you're a son or a daughter..."
"...or maybe I'll be lucky enough to have both."
He smiled.
"If that's true..."
"I hope you inherited your mother's courage."
Noah couldn't hold back his tears.
For the first time in his life...
He heard his father's voice.
Then Michael's expression became serious.
"There is something hidden inside this lighthouse."
Samuel lowered his head.
He had never watched the rest.
Michael continued.
"It's evidence."
"Enough evidence to destroy the people who wanted me dead."
Lily looked toward Samuel.
"You've had this all these years?"
Samuel nodded.
"I made him a promise."
"I would protect it until his children were old enough to decide what to do."
The tape flickered.
Michael reached into his pocket and held up a small brass key.
"If you're seeing this..."
"...then the time has finally come."
He smiled one last time.
"The key opens a vault beneath the lighthouse."
"There you'll find the truth..."
"...and the names of the people who stole our family."
The screen suddenly went black.
No one spoke.
The only sound was the wind crashing against the lighthouse windows.
Then...
A loud metallic click echoed beneath the floorboards.
Samuel's face turned white.
He slowly looked toward the trapdoor in the corner.
"I..."
"...never heard that sound before."
Someone...Or something...
May you like
Had just unlocked the vault from the inside.
